Winter Trailer Conversion

Postby Rob-merlin1973 on Wed Oct 28, 2009 3:14 pm

Ok so after the last trip to shell island where every item in the trailer got soaked becouse of the canvas top i decided that my winter task was to do something about it.
I wanted to split the trailer so that it was one third for the tent and its other bits and pieces and two thirds for all the other bits. I also wanted a hard top so that the bikes can be fixed on the top.
The idea is that the canopy on the tent is big enough to take the trailer so if it is raining the trailer can be pushed under the canopy, the large section opened and all the sleeping bags etc loaded up in the dry. shut the trailer, take the tent down and then load this in the small section so keeping the other stuff dry. :D
The trailer used to be a trailer tent that had already had a little conversion done to extend the sides

This was a decent base to work from but as the camping gear is always stacked past the sides i needed more height. I looked at materials and decided on softwood ply due to weight, This is not ideal for exterior applications but with a lot of priming and undercoating
Right stage one, was to draw out the design using the most up to date system available, a pen and a post it note, and then get the required ply.
The following was a few steps of the creation

1314
1315
1317

1319
Ok so this is as far as i have got at the moment.
All seems to be working so now ti is time for a lot of preperation and paint and work on the inside getting the sections seperated.
I will keep you informed as i carry on

Brilliant!

Excellent idea to split the tent off from the rest of the gear.

Bit more work
Primer Undercoat going on

Having removed the carpet (which was stuck in with the strongest glue in the world) the centre divider is going in.

The garage is 260,000 square feet :D

Its our works warehouse which is now empty so plenty of room for tent drying and winter work ;)

Right so i asked the kids what colour the trailer should be (Big mistake) and after the list of reds, pinks, oranges, stripes and spots i decided to totally ignore them and go with good old fashioned black and silver.

So now the inside is painted it's time to get the outside sorted. ;)

I had to think of a way to stop water getting through the join in the lid so i came up with this heath robinson idea of using silicone sealant on one surface and letting it set to make a kind of rubber seal
1344
When the lid shuts it should compress the silicone and create a seal :?
I will do the other side today and then test it tomorrow with the jetwash.

Also managed to fit the support brackets to give a little extra strength and the lock.

Wow it's really coming on.

It has made me think about putting a solid lid on our erde trailer but doubt I'll get around to it tbh.

I have realized though that with a solid lid and a leg/wheel on the drawbar (so the trailer is level) would give us a solid flat surface about 1m high, which would be a good height for a camp kitchen. Also given the trailer has a drop rear side, it would give a shelf underneath - I've not explained that very well and I'll never get around to it but I thought I'd share :-)
