Shell Island is great and a regular visit of ours.
Yes it can get windy, but we never park on the exposed cliffs. We find it much better around the back and had some excellent pitches among the trees/bushes by the huge sand dunes (Shell Island is massive - don't think campsite, this is a
lot bigger).
Though even in the more sheltered area I've spent a disturbed night through not bringing the right pegs for sand when the wind got up. And as Wales goes, we've had windier inland.
Enough of an area even by the dunes for a large group. However, there's no electric hook-up, a few "dodgy" port-a-loos (a bit of a trek away and we bought a chem loo just for Shell Island), and only a few water stand-pipes...which can be more of a walk with a heavy water container.
If need be, you can drive to the main shower block.
Not a lot of people find this hidden spot as you have to take the road (track) right up to the dunes, and then keep going. And in August, you'll need to get there early to get a good spot.
You could have a good look with Google Maps satellite image. After entering the site take a left and keep going. If following the map the road almost doubles around to the old RAF airfield.
Parking your car is not an issue but you do need to check tide times to make sure you can get on and off the causeway. We've had no problem with taking a trailer, and there's also lots of camper vans.
(We gave
Shell Island a write up here).
A great choice for the camp out. We did have some other plans in August but I'll add it to the calendar.
