Nutgone's first caravan....

Postby nutgone on Fri Nov 04, 2011 9:49 pm

Those of you who have been following will know I've been thinking about getting a caravan. I still like my tents, but a lot of my camping is at steam rallies, where there are no facilities. I also get fed up with all the effort required to set up & take down my tents, especially if it's just a weekend trip.

No doubt I will continue to use my tents. I went to much trouble to get my real canvas frame tents this year, & as money's always an issue, I doubt I will be able to afford to tow a caravan on the longer distance camps, it's more for local stuff & weekend trips.

Anyway, despite my haste, I managed to wait, & wait, & wait, until a real bargain came along. I saw a local caravan for sale on ebay, at totally the wrong time of year IMO (early november??? ), the guy hadn't bothered to put any pics up, so I didn't think he was too bothered.

So, I went to see him. He was a very nice elderly gentleman, who's son was advertising it for him. He seemed to like me, & although he had already been made an offer, he said he would like me to have it (I wasn't too pushy, & made an effort to show my enthusiasm). So we made a deal & now it's mine :D .

It's a 1990 Lunar Clubman 390-2, it has been very well looked after. I got it back to my storage place this morning & promptly went back out there with the battery (which he had kept fully charged during the last 2 years the caravan has been laid-up, un-used!) & about 30L of water. Connected the gas & had a tinker.

There are one or two niggly bits to sort, but nothing serious. It could easily be taken away for a holiday straight away.

I've taken some pics & put them in new photobucket album, which can be found here:
http://photobucket.com/nutgones_caravan

I will post a few up now, but this forum tends to remove the right hand side of my pics, they can be seen whole, & in all their glory, on the album link above.....

Someone's bound to ask, so I suppose I should tell you all....

I got it for £480 (which I think is a very good price).

looks like a good buy, nothing a bit of a clean up wont fix, seems tidy and clean enough inside, well worth the money, just think how many tents you could fit in there lol

The mud on the front happened when we were towing it to storage (it's down a very muddy country lane), but yes, the outside does need a good clean, inside is perfect, just a tiny bit of dusting here & there.

Now, the bit I forgot to mention;
It hasn't got a spare wheel, any ideas where to get one? Will check out a few breakers on ebay, but if anyone knows any car rims that will fit, I have access to a few different ones.

Hi Nutgone's
Yes you certainly have got a nice little caravan there,But if you are a tent man like me,I find it hard to get exited about them. but you wont have a problem towing it with your car :D I bet you don't know you have it attached. :bigwink: We bought one of these for short stay camps so when we go out to our rubbish bin or come home with shopping we can stay dry until we unlock and get in. http://www.blackcountryawnings.co.uk/su ... es/nr.aspx
they are well made.
Good luck and enjoy your winter camps :tent: ??

Thanks Rex, I was wondering when you were going to get round to my caravan :bigwink:

I like the canopy as well, very good price. My awning is made by NR, as was the trailer tent my dad bought, brand new back in the early 80s. It was my introduction to camping, an NR Nimrod trailer tent (some of my earliest childhood memories) so I'm expecting good things from my awning.

My dad now has a similar sized caravan to mine, I might see if he wants to go halves on a canopy, or I might just save up & treat myself to one.

Hi Matt, well done on finaly getting your van, We had a Lunar Meteorite a few years ago. kept it for 3 years and sold it on for twice what we paid for it. LOL best thing that i found for cleaning cookers and hobs is ...............
toothpaste Gel the one in a bottle. - smear it on and wipe it off after a good soak. everything comes off with it and no hard scrubbing. brings chrome up like new as well [tip for car ROFLMAO ] :rofl2:

Any plumbers out there??? Can you take a look at this for me?....

Got problems with my washroom taps. Does anyone on here know if I can get a replacement insert for them?

The current plastic one looks like this

I think the problem is the washer isn't lifting with the spindle properly. I'm having a go at sticking it on it's top face to see if that helps.

The only trouble is I've chewed them up a bit dismantling them. Bloody silly idea having a plastic insert anyway.

My thoughts are, if I can get a normal household tap insert small enough to fit in (IE, with the same thread as the brass nut on my current one) it may work.

Any ideas?

BTW, the pics were taken on a normal square of kitchen roll. I can measure the washers (or any other parts) with a digital vernier gauge, if it will help.

Oh yes, & here's the washroom before I pulled the taps apart....

Basically, the older spindles have a small ridge on them which is supposed to make sure the washer rises with the rest of it, therefore letting water through.

But, due to the tight fit of the washer in the tap body, & the fact this small ridge (or perhaps the washer) is no longer up to the job, the washer stays partially seated, so I only get a tiny dribble from the taps.

The only 2 which are doing it both have the same white coloured plastic spindle assembly, all the others are either blue or black, & seem to work fine. These have obviously been replaced at some point, but I can't seem to find them anywhere.

It might actually help if I knew what make the taps are??? Does anyone know? They were standard on old Lunars. Non-microswitched system.
