Volunteers wanted! Working at airshows....

Postby CrazyCamper on Fri Mar 04, 2011 11:48 am

I wonder if there's anyone on here that is interested in combining camping with doing a spot of volunteering with the Events Team that are behind 3 airshows a year at Cotswold Airport (former RAF Kemble)?
I just happen to be the Volunteer Co-ordinator for the team, as well as a camping enthusiast of course, and we're currently working up to the forthcoming season, starting in June!

The shows:

Cotswold Airshow June 18th/19th: http://www.cotswoldairshow.com/

Great Vintage Flying Weekend July 30th/31st

Battle of Britain Airshow September 17th/18th

There is an active facebook group for volunteers: https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=75449786698&v=app_2344061033

An insight into the volunteer's role:

Here is a brief idea of what is involved and what we expect:
The show takes place at Cotswold Airport, just outside Cirencester on June 18th/19th. It is a very busy show, with an ever-increasing attendance by the public and a wide variety of aircraft attending too. The Events Team is not as large as people might assume when they see the show site, but we are a hard-working & friendly bunch who have a lot of experience over the years we've been doing this...
Putting on a show like this does not happen overnight, so we have to 'build' the showground from an empty field - literally hundreds of barriers to lay out, traders to organise pitches for, infrastructure to sort (power / water / loos etc). We are in particular looking for volunteers who can spare the time to help with this massive build-up, and this starts on the Tuesday before the show, and ends on the Monday after with the clear-up. We don't expect everyone to have the same spare time, so the team numbers increase as the build-up week goes by (I'm on site from the Monday so I'm ready for the start on the Tuesday am).

Basic camping is provided adjacent to a site-based motorcycle club (Ogri) who go out of their way to make us welcome, and we are catered for courtesy of the show organiser Glen Moreman, so we don't all starve or go thirsty!
Those that help out with the setting up / clearing down etc, are looked on favourably when it comes to designating roles over the public weekend, as well as previous experience at this event. We all started somewhere, so it is realistic to expect to start on some of the jobs that may seem trivial, but are all equally as important when working as one team! As the new team members get known by those in charge, the roles they get are then based on their specific skills and experience for the next show....
We are a friendly team, and the experience of working with us has meant that we all come back for more! It's always nice to see new faces join us, as we lose some whose commitments or circumstances change etc.

I hope this has given you a bit of an insight, but if you want to know more, feel free to ask away!

Yes there are ample photographic opportunities from 'the other side of the fence' ;)

So if you want to combine camping with airshows - here's your chance!

If my youngest was about 5 years older, I would be looking at buying a Tigris 400 for the 2 of us and stuff the women

I'll get back you on this one in the future

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

Sounds good however couldn't cope with the basic camping thing- is there showers available??? I know this sounds daft but as already mentioned I need to tame the hair regularly!!!

Basic camping in that it's a greenfield site (part of the airfield itself), with nothing in the way of permanent facilities...
We get porta-loos hired in, and porta-shower hut too, which arrive on site later in the week towards the public weekend. From memory we do have a loo by the campsite earlier than that for those setting up - but not the showers.
I have my own facilities to be honest, including electric, so I never had an issue
No site rules to contend with either :tune:

My own generator - no hook ups available....

I've built up my gear over the years doing these shows to be self-sufficient, including my own loo tent. Although the loo's have been provided I don't like running around in any rain to get to one.

Found some more photos which may give you an idea of:

a) how big the airfield site is!

b) what sort of camping area we have for our June event - which is arrowed in both photos.

There is an adjacent clubhouse run by the resident Ogri Motorcycle Club (if you don't know them, they were formed by members of the forces, and are a very friendly and welcoming group, with their hospitality towards us being the stuff of legends!)
Oh and I'm a biker too, so dispel any concepts of "hairy bikers" when you look at my profile pic >>

Well the big show is over and done with now - what a fantastic time was had by all. I was actually down for the weeke beforehand, and returned home Tuesday (lots of work to build up and clear away either side of the weekend's event itself).

I have a full online gallery of my own pics here: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v126/CrazyCourier/Cotswold%20Airshow%202011/ but as a taster of the camping element:

Image
My Coleman Coastline 6 with front awning extension plus gazebo to one side. Also have a loo tent at rear and I was providing a sheltered space inside the windbreaks for others in the team too....

Image
Inside I had a brand new bargain carpet at last - Towsure example that almost filled the entire tent.... :bigwink: plus first time with my ebay bargain kitchen larder set-up which supplemented my cooker stand nicely

Image
The view out from my tent - that awning extension was very nice to have (cost me a bargain £10 via ebay) and was bigger than expected!

Image
The Full Monty - my 4x4 with roof rack, plus my trailer with it's own matching roof rack. All used to spread the load nicely

My Dad would of loved all this when he was younger. He use to take us to all the South East shows when we were kids. :)
Happiness is packing your tent away dry & getting it back in the bag :-)
