I just happen to be the Volunteer Co-ordinator for the team, as well as a camping enthusiast of course, and we're currently working up to the forthcoming season, starting in June!
The shows:
Cotswold Airshow June 18th/19th: http://www.cotswoldairshow.com/
Great Vintage Flying Weekend July 30th/31st
Battle of Britain Airshow September 17th/18th
There is an active facebook group for volunteers: https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=75449786698&v=app_2344061033
An insight into the volunteer's role:
Here is a brief idea of what is involved and what we expect:
The show takes place at Cotswold Airport, just outside Cirencester on June 18th/19th. It is a very busy show, with an ever-increasing attendance by the public and a wide variety of aircraft attending too. The Events Team is not as large as people might assume when they see the show site, but we are a hard-working & friendly bunch who have a lot of experience over the years we've been doing this...
Putting on a show like this does not happen overnight, so we have to 'build' the showground from an empty field - literally hundreds of barriers to lay out, traders to organise pitches for, infrastructure to sort (power / water / loos etc). We are in particular looking for volunteers who can spare the time to help with this massive build-up, and this starts on the Tuesday before the show, and ends on the Monday after with the clear-up. We don't expect everyone to have the same spare time, so the team numbers increase as the build-up week goes by (I'm on site from the Monday so I'm ready for the start on the Tuesday am).
Basic camping is provided adjacent to a site-based motorcycle club (Ogri) who go out of their way to make us welcome, and we are catered for courtesy of the show organiser Glen Moreman, so we don't all starve or go thirsty!
Those that help out with the setting up / clearing down etc, are looked on favourably when it comes to designating roles over the public weekend, as well as previous experience at this event. We all started somewhere, so it is realistic to expect to start on some of the jobs that may seem trivial, but are all equally as important when working as one team! As the new team members get known by those in charge, the roles they get are then based on their specific skills and experience for the next show....
We are a friendly team, and the experience of working with us has meant that we all come back for more! It's always nice to see new faces join us, as we lose some whose commitments or circumstances change etc.
I hope this has given you a bit of an insight, but if you want to know more, feel free to ask away!
