First pitch tips

Postby KLCG on Mon Aug 30, 2010 11:00 am

Hi all
I thought id move into this bit now, just bought an Outwell Montana 6 with front extension, with the carpet. Planning on a small weekend away mid September to try it out with our two little monkeys (5yrs & 11mths!)

Ok so think of me as not having a clue, what tips can you give me for our first time pitching up at camp.

What to remember and what to leave behind etc because as i said we are a bit cluless

If you havn't got ehu, you will need plenty of blankets, duvets, sleeping bags, even a hat each if you have one. It's supprising how cold it gets a night , even in the middle of summer. If you get a good nights sleep, you can cope with everything else.
Happiness is packing your tent away dry & getting it back in the bag :-)

Hi
Have you tried to put the tent up yet or are you planning to do so before you go?

Put the tent up first at least once.

When you get there you might only be able to pitch in one position but otherwise try to get on a level bit of ground with the tents back to the wind..

Dont be afraid to ask for help (if the winds really blowing or somthing like that) campers are generally helpfull and wont mind. (ater pitching on our last trip i ended up helping to pitch 2 other strangers tents)

Take a flask of coffee and accept it might take a bit of time on your first pitch to get right, take your time and enjoy a hot drink whilst your setting up.

Also don't put the tent in the car and pack everything round it, make sure the tent, porch, carpet and mallet are the first four things that fall out of the car. You don't want to unpack everything into a big pile just to get at the tent, or be hunting for the mallet.

Take hot water bottles and a wooly hat each.

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

But if the tent is the first thing to fall out, it will be buried under everything else, as the rest falls out.

I second taking a drink with you. By the time we finished pitching this weekend we where parched and only had water from the tap to drink until I went shopping. Oh and expect arguments and muttering when someone accidentally tells you something wrong and you have to undo what you have just done.

Male translation filter applied to above post, rereads as:

You know, I do think part of the knack to putting a tent up is accepting that it doesn't take 2 people, but it does take 1 person with 2 sets of hands in two places.

If you accept someone's going to be the lead pitcher and then just do what they ask, rather than try and do something you see and think needs doing, things go smoother. Also if your gonna be a lead pitcher, you have to be clear about what bit your gonna do next and be sure your assistant ( ) is clear in what you want.

Also make sure you have read the :rules: , or watched the video and understood the video.
