Taking kids camping

Postby Vjay on Fri Aug 13, 2010 8:26 am

Hi all,

Basically we have 2 girls who both turned 1 and 3 last June. Now that we are planning our first expedition in our tent in September I've been telling everyone who'll listen lol (not that I'm excited in any way). However I seem to be getting quite a bit of negative response about taking the girls as they are too young. I don't think they are and obviously I'd have to keep a good watch on them and be careful of the cooker etc but I do that anyway in the house. I'm going to get them both those waterproof overalls and just let them run (and crawl) free. Getting a little heater too - so as long as they don't get cold and are enjoying themselves I don't see what's wrong.

I've never taken kids camping before but we are always out walking in the woods or mountain with them. has anyone got any experience of taking young kids and what was it like ?

Many thanks

Vjx

I haven't got kids but have seen plenty of people take young ones. Aslong as you're prepared to keep your eyes peeled you'll have a great time

We took our two ( 5 and 2) away last weekend for the first time and they loved it. We set ground rules with them regarding the cooker, where they could go etc. and had no problems whatsoever. We're away again next weekend so it couldn't have been too bad.

Girls are not to young.. Let me guess those telling you they are two young don't camp?

We shared a camping experience with a new born couple of years ago.. not ours.. a dutch couple in a caravan.. they seemed to enjoy.

so dont worry your kids are perfect age..

and if your wondering. that sweet spot! or the perfect age for kids and camping is 0 to 18 (some of knock that down to 0 - 14 (you seen kevin n perry???)) ;)

Have a great time :)

Camping and kids is like marmite and peanut butter a perfect combination ;)

Our kids love going they have a wonderful time and can't wait for the next trip, we've been 6 times this year with ours (the little ones are 3 and 6). Oh and the 13 year old loves it too so be prepared for many years of camping with kids to come.

Just to add to what the others have said really.

You and the kids will have a great time!

Mine are 2 and 4 and absolutely love camping. They love the fresh air, the freedom, the friends they make (when you're camping everyone's kids play with everyone elses and it's great!), the relaxed routine ... just everything about it really!

we chill out a bit on the routine and they are usually really late to bed the first night (was gone 10pm last trip) but the novelty wears off then and we can get them down earlier - mainly cos they're shattered! We can enjoy a chat and a few drinks then lol!

On our last trip I asked my 2 year old if she liked camping and she said yes. I asked her what she liked best and she shouted 'RUNNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!" and ran off to play and roll around with her new friends!!

Hope you have a great time

I don't think your girls are too young to take, either. As long as you are well prepared with warm clothing, waterproofs, etc, as you say, I'm sure you will do just fine. They will love it. We have three kids, 11, 7 and 6 months. My husband convinced me that taking our youngest away with us when he was 9 weeks old was a good idea, and although I was a 'bit' apprehensive  , it was fine. It didn't muck up his bedtime routine (as he was sleeping through prior to going, and I was worried he wouldn't if we took him out of his familiar environment). He was lovely and warm in his own sleeping bag and pup-style tent.

I thought he was 8weeks old when we first took him :|

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

Being a newbie, not sure if this is picked up elsewhere on the forum, but when my boys were old enough, we bought some Binatone walkie talkies so that they could roam the campsite but we could be in contact if needed. They thought it was a big adventure.

I know its a bit too early for the OPs children but I'm keeping them for my daughter's turn in a couple of years.
