What I'm really doing in Norfolk

Postby nutgone on Tue Oct 11, 2011 9:10 pm

Well, I'm currently on my weeks camping holiday. I know, I know, I must be mad. But my tent is real canvas, which is surprisingly warm, & I have 2 gas heaters & a gas lamp, none of which I've had much call for, especially around meal times, as I'm also naughty enough to cook in my tent (I don't know how I'm still alive!)

On a serious note, I am conscious of carbon monoxide, & my detector has yet to sound

So, I originally came away for a "canvas only" meet, arranged by another forum. This was near Market Harborough, which is quite a distance, hence me making it into a weeks holiday.
I was going to spend 3 nights there, which I have, & move south, towards home, stopping a further 2 times on the way.
That was until I received a PM from a member about a wanted ad I had posted. He had for sale a small Cabanon frame tent (the Calvi), possibly the smallest canvas frame tent in the world, & just the thing I had been looking for.
He only wanted £50 for it, it's a 1 owner job & has seen very little use.

It's an absolute bargain, so I've been keeping very tight-lipped about it, not to mention the fuss my mum will make about it if she finds out!

Anyway, the tent was in Norwich, so that's where I have taken my holiday. I'm at a place called Top Farm (another Great Campsite under a tenner) I arrived yesterday afternoon & picked up my new baby this evening.

After my recent move to real canvas, this year, I can say I doubt I will ever look back. I will be keeping my plastic dome tent, for any longer, touring type, trips, as canvas is very heavy & bulky, even with the smaller tents. But as I'm a solo camper I have a whole car to myself, so can afford a little luxury.
I think this new, smaller, Cabanon will be the one I keep after I get a caravan, as I won't be able to afford to tow a caravan very far, but would still like some standing room on my longer camping trips.

Anyway, some pics.... (these will have the right side chopped off, full versions are in my photobucket camping album http://s682.photobucket.com/albums/vv183/nutgone_matt/camping/)

Here's the Calvi, 2 man frame tent by Cabanon (with rare extra "sun canopy")

& here's my current Cabanon C series, the Chambord, 5 man frame tent. I bought it as I really wanted a C series, but it's far too big for me. I really wanted the Calais (3 man) or Champagne (4 man), but beggars can't be choosers, & the C series are very popular.

My plan is to set them up next to each other, maybe even put one inside the other, & take some more pics, but the weather just isn't up to it ATM, & there just isn't room on this site. Maybe if I stop again on my way home. (Anyone know any good, cheap sites between Norwich & Eastbourne???)

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

We have the three berth, and it's a beautiful tent, easy to pitch even for one. Love it! :D
Hilleberg Nammatj 3GT, Terra Nova Quasar, Cabanon Andorra & Calais, Outwell Trout Lake, Hi-Gear Ion 3 and hopefully a Field Candy 'Get a Room' coming soon!

Wayne, I completely forgot about "that picture" it was emailed to me along with a common saying, followed by the words "I thought it was just an expression"....
can you guess what the common saying is??? :rofl2:

Thanks Badger,

& Donnelly, the Chambord can be put up single handed (meaning by myself, using both hands, not literally "single" handed) but it's not easy, you have to pick your pitch very carefully & do any re-positioning before the canvas goes on the frame.
Getting it off it's knees needs doing in a very specific order as well, to avoid any bent poles, which is why I was after a smaller model for my solo camping (seems I'll never find a camping partner :( )

I really wanted the slightly larger one, but this one turns out to be a 1 owner & has barely even been used, so I just couldn't say no......... Could I????

As long as I can make my kitchen unit fit in it'll be fine, I'm sure.

Ahhhh, now i know what i saw on a campsite at Keswick earlier this year, it was the Calvi 2.

I remarked on the tent to my missus but never did find out the model (never saw much of the guy who owned it).

Tis one nice little tent and can vouch for it's robustness as it deflected all the weather that was thrown at it

Hi Nutgone
That series of Cabanon tents must be about the easiest to set up in my opinion. We had one for years back along for a weekender.
Here it is on Exmoor with the sheep :bigwink: must have just pitched as the guys are not yet pegged out   :rofl2:

I finally got the Calvi test pitched today, & what a great little tent.

Initially I was disappointed, looking at the frame on it's knees I thought it was going to be far too small, but once up I could see it was easily big enough for just me.

As far as condition goes, well the bloke told me he & his wife bought it some 10 or 11 years ago, on a whim, thinking they'd give camping another go. They ended up using it for a couple of weekends.
Well, I doubt it has even seen that much action, I can say with some certainty that IMO the bedroom pod has never even been used, as the normal method is to spike the pegs through the storm flaps, & this has never been done. There were also NO marks whatsoever on the inside or outside of the bedroom pod, or it's groundsheet (SIG).

the rest of the tent still had the odd "cut-off" thread stuck to it here & there, just like you'd get with a brand new shirt, straight out of the packet.

The whole thing just looked, felt & even smelled like a new tent, what a bargain!

Anyway, I've taken a few pics (34 to be exact) & I've put them in their own photobucket album, which you can find here....

here's a few for a taster (with the right hand side chopped off, as always  )

Oooh Nutgone, well done :tent: I don't normally do 'envy' but this time I'll make an exception . I'm a recent newbie on here and saw this little gem in the ads section, pm'd the seller asking if it was still for sale but obviously had already been sold. :bang: Gutted is wot I am, just gutted. But pleased for you at the same time.

Am looking to extend my camp abilities to match my physical abilities so thinking about a camper/day/van, but couldn't resist an enquiry when I saw the Calvi. PLEASE PLEASE let me know if you change your mind about it. bye4now. Lofty
PS - we met in 'another' life but a diff name.

What I've learned about these little Cabanons (apart from what great tents they are) is that they do turn up, but all in good time, patience truly is a virtue.
Also, the Chambord really is too big & is really a 2 man job to erect.

I'm intrigued, & I'm thinking hard, ( <see), but it's late & I've been at the red wine again, it's the last night of my holiday & I've gotta get me beauty sleep, but I'm still intrigued......

Got back about 8:30 this evening. I didn't leave site until about 3:30pm, & took an easy drive home, stopping for dinner on the way & calling in to see some friends about 15 miles from home.

Funnily enough, as always, I didn't really do much, but I still had a good time. Just nice to get away & relax a bit. The new tent was the icing on the cake, I'm really chuffed with it. :D
