The Danger of the wind

Postby rexgrant on Sun Sep 04, 2011 12:38 pm

Hi all
Wind, every year 100's of tents, trailer tents, folding Campers, and caravan awning are damaged and destroyed with the Wind What to expect when you read or here a forecast for strong wind. http://www.thudscave.com/petroglyphs/pdf/beaufort.pdf .
Most tents and trailer tents are damaged because they have not been correctly or fully pegged out to hold the tent on the ground. It only takes one guy rope to give way putting extra strain on the others for the tent to eventually collapse. Take a look at this gale and note the campers are not having much difficulty in walking into the wind, and as we all know what it like to walk into strong winds. The heavy rain makes the experience very unpleasant for the campers but in my opinion the wind strength was not above Gale force 7 and most of these tents are small and have better wind resistance than our large family tents.Looking again it looks as it did increase to possibly a force 9. in the period of the video.

Gale force wind above 7 are very rare in the UK on inland camp sites but can reach 9 or storm force 10 on campsite open to the sea. Most of us as herd of the devastation caused at Shell Island every now and again.

So what can we do if we are unlucky enough to be camping and caught out in a Gale strong gale.
As we all know some tents are better equipped to stand up to these winds and it as often been said you get what you pay for. but regardless of what tent you have chosen you can do things that will help your tent withstand very strong winds .......if you have been issued with wire pegs use the for guying your washing line down, never use them on a family tent, what pushes in easy comes out easy. The next few comments are my opinions on tent pegs. 8" plus plastic pegs are OK but the 7" plus galvanised steel 90deg pegs are the best.
For your guy ropes there is nothing on the market will better the delta ground anchor The Stainless steel ones
hold better But there are times you may not have run out or lost some delta pegs then you can double peg your guy rope the ground were I needed to put a delta peg was a mass of rubble so I got round it by double pegging with my rock pegs http://.........../apps/photos/ph ... d=51192841 and for campers new to the game the pegs I used with my tents   http://.........../apps/photos/al ... id=4607175
Just on Item to add to this post As said If you should loose a corner guy rope in all probability you will loose the tent and your hard earned holiday. So These little Items really are a must have for camper that hold up their units with the help of Guy Ropes THE CLIGON If your guy rope attachment should brake an instant repair can be made with these, they work I have used them for a few years now, also use for guying down a builders tarp as the eyelets brake out very easy, you can also buy these were you get your delta pegs from.

I hope this Sermon may help our members that are new to the wonderful life under Canvas.
PS If you tent starts to collapse around you just get the family away from it most campers are hurt with flying poles trying to save the tent
All the Best
Rex.

Good post Rex and that storm was something else.

I agree with everything you say regarding the wind and how to be prepared

And you have also reminded me that I really do need to stock up on a few additional items from Delta (about £40 in total). I'll see if there is a sale over winter  .

I would like to add a little bit, this might seem a bit extreme, but I lost a tent to the rain and wind in 08 and I try to think of everything now.

If I have to abandon the tent in really bad weather and I risk losing it, I carry a coil of para cord, the idea is to drop the tent and peg the whole thing down to the ground with para-cord. The tent would survive and go back up once things improve.

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...
