When you see a pic of one of these modern windbreaks, with all it's guy ropes, next to a modern tunnel tent, with all it's guy ropes, the whole thing tends to look like a pylon came down or something

I mean, I wouldn't want to negotiate round all those guy ropes at night after a few drinks, it's an accident waiting to happen :o
Little kids must spend most of their time tripping over them, I know my nephews are bad enough with just the tent guy ropes.

I've never gone for a windbreak myself, I think they're antisocial. I mean lets face it, if it was that windy you'd probably have to take the damn thing down anyway, to avoid it getting damaged or blowing away.

Probably handy if you're pitched right next to the loos though (as pictured above) or next to a path/possible short-cut across your pitch, but apart from that, I like to see what's going on from outside my tent, I like to enjoy the view & like to be able to acknowledge my fellow campers as they walk by.

Antisocial yep, but a must if you have a dog thats a bit unsociable

Also I quite like sitting out at night round the campfire and prefer the windbreak behind me, makes it a bit cosier

Windbreaks

Postby TerryV on Fri Aug 26, 2011 7:49 pm

We've tried fabric camping type windbreaks a couple of times including when we set up yesterday but always go back to wooden pole type.

I like to set up a sheltered area around my tent awning for a cooking area but still like to sit outside this area when the weather is nice and we don't have one outside the main door.

I have a Outwell winbreak and its great. I used to buy one or two of the wooden ones a year and would have to re-erect them each morning after a wind, well the ones that weren't destroyed and ripped.

We have had the same quality Outwell one since 2009 now and its still going strong.

I do worry though as its only colour co-ordinated to my Carolina, Nutgone should i also get the other colour to match my Vermont  :tune:

I don't tend to use it though as a screen from the campsite as I like to see whats going off and if I'm going to sit behind a screen then I can stay at home in the garden and get the same view.

We do set it up to do as it says on the tin (break the wind). Sometimes we will set it up to one side of the tent for a bit of protection to the table if we eat outside or we might set it up at a slight angle to the side of the tent being battered by wind. Although I have to be honest I haven't even used it this year.

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

Yes Wayne, if you are going to have one it might as well match! :rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

(can't do smilies on my phone, but if I could I would be laughing. Very quietly though, as I'm laying in bed, in my tent).

I was "that close" to buying a windbreak myself at the show today!

I know, I know! It was me calling them antisocial & all that. That's what stopped me in the end. Well, than & the fact I'm actually trying to stop buying more camping stuff & concentrate on looking for a cheap caravan.

(Yes, a caravan)

Anyway, I didn't get the windbreak, but i'm very glad I got the almost new Camping Gaz Baby Blue heater (with unknown quantity of gas) for £7 on saturday, it's blmuin' freezing tonight!

Was in The Range earlier today & Mrs saw this going cheap, about £8.99 after savings & further price reductions.
I persuaded her to buy it by pleading skintness myself.
See how it going, takes up less room than the wooden poled ones, maybe time to retire them.

edit: revamped the guy lines.

Hi all. We make windbreaks from recycled sail cloth that have proved very popular with campers. No guy ropes needed, look good, eco friendly and keep the wind off. Check out our windbreaks and have a look at our facebook page http://facebook.com/wightsails for images of windbreaks being used on campsites.
