Cadacs

Cadacs, are they any good?

I'm not trying to cause any arguments here, and yes a comment on another thread has inspired me to ask the question, but it was something we talked about buying over the winter. Our friends had one when we went camping with them earlier and it seemed pretty good. We were thinking about the smaller one, safari chef I think it's called, even bid on a few on ebay and lost.

If someone has any thoughts, good or bad, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks

Bit pricey is my main bugbear with them as well, especially as you're only getting one burner.

If you want to cook stuff like pizzas etc, you'd be better off getting the right pots & pans IMO. Like a double skillet or an aluminium Dutch oven or something like that. The cadacs are quite bulky & take up quite a lot of space.

They seem to be very popular with caravanners, but they are less of an issue to transport with them I suppose.

At the end of the day it's your decision, & I can only offer my opinions. I have handled them in shops & seen them used on sites, but have never owned one of my own, as they cost around the £100 mark & I didn't even spend that much on my tent (any of my tents in fact).

I also hear cleaning both Cadacs & Cobbs is a bit of a PITA, especially if camping on very basic sites with no washing-up sinks. That's another thing which puts me off. I find I manage to create enough washing-up on my own! (one of my least favourite chores of camping, I would rather empty a chemical loo).

thats unlike you nuts to not have a dig at us cadacs and cobbs owners?.lol.
i can give my view on my cadac, it was expensive for what is a jumped up bbq, they do go down into a nice bag, but are heavy, id guess about 15kg, plus gas, and god what a bitch they are to clean, has taken me longer to clean than to cook, im finding it hard on mine to get the perfect heat normally i get it to hot, its very sturdy but all this is for the larger carri i think its called, but like nuts says i do carry mine in the caravan and i dont think id use one if i was tenting.

I dont see any need for one, all it is basically is a single burner cooker, a large frying pan, and a griddle pan, with a lid, you can do the same thing with a cheap gas bbq with a lid, a griddle pan and a large frying pan, and it would work out far cheaper, and easier to clean....

Thanks for the replies everyone, they've pretty much confirmed my thoughts. Might still keep an eye out for an ebay bargain though.

They are a very good "boys toy". All blokes love a gadget. I've got countless torches & lanterns in my collection, most of which have their faults. My most recent is a couple of baseball caps with built in LED head-lights.

I think the new baseball caps will be OK (although I have my doubts about the solar one) but many of my torches & lanterns are no longer in service. I still simply had to buy them though, & don't really regret it.

If barbecue's are your thing (I've never really bothered with them, as I'm a solo camper, most of the time) then go ahead & give one a try. Just make sure you get a good deal on it.

For some of us it's pegs, for others it's torches. Why not barbecues & cookers? Us blokes must have our gadgets. ;)

I love my Cadac (Safari Chef Deluxe)
Admittedly I haven't used it to it's full potential, but I am still trying to convince my OH that we don't have to go to the pub for every meal!
We used it for a couple of pretty big BBQs on the last couple of camping trips - so impressed (used the griddle attachment)
It cleans really easily, although the fat catching pan is a bit disgusting. It is reassuring that you are not in fact eating that amount of fat (compared to frying), but we tend to scoop the fat out once it has cooled, using kitchen roll, before attempting to wash it!
The main reason I love it though is that it folds up into a bag and is very compact (apart from the gas bottle!)

Hi there, thanks for the feedback. I'm still undecided but starting to move away from the Cadac idea. We've just got a new cast iron griddle pan, saw it reduced in BHS 2 days before Christmas so bought it and wrapped it up for the Wife  , so all I think we want it for is the wok option really. We have a small campingaz cylinder, 901 or something, so might look for a burner that screws onto that and a small wok instead.
