Sorry - I'm getting myself confused.... I meant to say Camping Gaz cooker :bang: as that has the ceramic grill.... doh!

Can't argue about the Coleman brand though - my tent is brilliant

I blame Andy for the confusion - just had him knocking on my door collecting my bike trailer as I was mid-post...

I was going to ask a similar question as I have the campingaz camping chef which is brilliant - except for toast!! it can be done as already said but for a group of 5 it takes ages - I was going to ask if any of those holders that let you do toast on te hob work at all in anyone's experience?

MOKAS answered about those hob toaster things above - and I have to agree they're useless....

I can imagine toast for 5 would take ages - I've just had my cooker out for a test in front of the OH - was actually surprised it did toast at all having not used the grill for years. Yes it was slower than at home, but it did do it after turning etc. Passed the taste test too.... so until I have the money to invest in new cooker soon, it will keep the OH happy in a couple of weeks when she tries camping for the first time.

I've spent a long time online researching all the current cooker models and leaning towards the Camping Gaz Chef model with it's ceramic grill which should be an improvement on my Talisman's simple mesh reflector type. Plus I have a feeling that the age of my Talisman means that the gas pipes are not 100% efficent anymore, and can't be replaced anyway.....

CrazyCamper wrote:Been pondering over replacing my trusty Talisman Cooker which I've had for years, it's not let me down at all to be fair, but the grill on it has never been good at doing toast :tune:

I've been studying reviews of all sorts of modern cookers, all pretty much the same spec with twin burner and grill, but I have a niggling doubt over whether any grill is good at something as simple as toast

I would rather go on the recommendations of existing users than reading some vague reviews from some who must like to moan and nothing else from what I've read :(

Someone on here should be able to convince me

PS: Having an electric toaster is NOT an option for my requirements, it's got to be a gas one.....

Hi CC
I have never had a camping stove that the grill made good toast I have always had to constantly keep it moving under the grill and only one slice.I have in the passed reverted to a toasting fork made from a wire coat-hanger and done a couple of slices for Val over the independent stove that screws into a camping gas bottle :D

Minor update by way of closing off this thread for me anyway - finally got round to purchasing a virtually brand new Campingaz Chef complete with the carry bag via a local ebayer.... Genuinely only used for 5 days as they went camping and whilst there with friends bought a caravan on the site they went to! Nice seller who was only too keen to show me how un-used it was - so got me a bargain complete set (the bags are usually seperate).

I was lucky on my last camping trip when a colleague happened to have the same cooker so I was able to see it in use first hand (he even burnt his toast showing me as it was too quick....lol).

Now me and OH have a new cooker to enjoy after 30 years with my trusty but tired Talisman

Thanks for all the input on this thread - it was all useful

Thats not by any chance the one that was "pick up only" in your neck of the woods was it. Been watching them and looking for a local one to me, but no look yet. Good buy

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

Hi Wayne - yep it was that one.... I was the only bidder too, and that was the second time listed according to the seller, so he was surprised there was any interest at this time of year. Hope you find one nearer you and grab a bargain too

Nice one Pete. I was contemplating bidding and sending Rob round for it on the bike :D , then getting it off him next time I see him. Glad I didn't bid and you got it at a good price now

Well if you are going to bring one of those portable grills, you could plan how you could cook so that you could save though there will be no efficient solution to it, really. I mean, the amount it uses is basically standard so you just have to watch the right levels in order to contain a good cook.

You could also try only putting a few amount of stock on the canister containing the liquid fuel. Also, you could probably make do with wood coal, but that option would be banned in some places.
