Gas bottle size advice.

Postby glen_patrick on Wed Aug 10, 2011 4:21 pm

Hi, i have just received my new gas stove from go outdoors as it was on special offer for £25.
I was just wondering what size calor gas bottle i would require for upto a weeks worth of cooking, as my brother has a 15kg bottle he could give me, but i am unsure on how much gas/time use this will give me, and wether i shoud get a larger or smaller bottle.

thanks for your time.

15kg will last you a very long time, depends how much room you have to carry it. the 15kg is a big heavy bottle and difficult to move around.

I personally have 2 x 7.5kg but I have a trailer to stick them in, they are a size I can handle with ease. Even these will last a long time.

You can get smaller light weight cylinders but the it's the cost of the refill when you start working it out the £ to KG.

Have a look on the cal or website https://secure.calor.co.uk/OrderCalorCylinders/

Best thing to do is look on ebay for a cylinder then get a refill, it will save you the cylinder deposit.

I use a 15 and are well into our second season on it so a 7 or 15 should be fine

for a week, you could get away with a 4.5kg butane or a 3.9kg propane, the bottles are the same size, try to stay away from campingaz as their largest bottle (907) only holds 2.5kg of gas, and are expensive to refill. the larger the bottle, the less it works out to refill, but a 6kg butane or propane refill only should cost between £15-20 for a refill depending where you go, don't bother with the stuff they call patio gas, its just propane in a green bottle.

We got a campingaz Camping Chef stove last year and are about to set out for Scotland again (family of 6)...

My questions are these:

How easy is it to find Campingaz refills (our 904 is nearly empty)? The Campingaz site only shows a few, but I know there are more. Any advice welcome.

Or would I do better to get a different regulator and change to Calor etc? If so what would people recommend? And what should I do with the old 904 cylinder in that case?

All answers gratefully received!

Campingaz only comes in 3 size refills, the 901 that holds ½ kg of gas, the 904 that holds 1.8kg of gas and the 907 that holds 2.7kg of gas. you can get refills from most camping stores, but you will pay more for these refills compared to other size of bottle... Then you have the calor bottles, that have calor painted on them, these are far better for cost per kg of gas compared to campingaz, but if you dont have a calor cylinder, they will sting you for a rental agreement (one off charge),and that varies from place to place, a local place near me only charges £10 for the agreement but the normal is £29.99 then the price of gas on top. if you can scrounge a calor bottle then do that, and you dont have to pay the rental fee, or you can get empty calor bottles off ebay ect. the other offer is local gas suppliers, flogas, atlas gas ect, these dont often charge the rental agreement, if you have a bottle gas type heater (household type) , that type bottle can be used, it all depends on where you are located to whats available to you..

im sure if you told us a rough location of where you are, someone can point you in the right direction for a good deal on gas

Thanks, that's helpful - I live in the Lake District, near Penrith. I know there's a local flogas supplier at Penruddock, but don't know anything about flogas. There are lots of campsites around, of course, but in my (limited) experience it seems far more have Calor than Campingaz...

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum :welcome:

I have nothing to add as Mokas has covered it all

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

Thank you Mokas, ive just joined the forum and just been browsing through topics but found your post very useful, I already have a Calor Gas bottle for my BBQ so was reluctant to go and buy a campingaz one especially at the price they are for the size.

I think ill just buy a new Gas regulator off ebay and use my existing gas bottle.
Just started doing things I used to love as a kid, bought myself and Hi Gear Sahara 6, footprint & carpet to start.

Now my Camping Gaz cylinder is empty I'm planning to move to Calour Gas due to cost. I asked the local council if I could have one of the empty cylincers from the tip as they get loads dumped but they said no. Will get a cylinder off Ebay like I did with the Camping Gaz one I guess.

Its probably because they think your going to refil it,

tell them you want to cut it up to make a BBQ, they may give you one then, also some car scrap yards have them floating about, you could try those places too,

The last one I got from our local 'civic amenities site' cost me a fiver, straight into the 'C.A.S. team's' xmas fund. :D :D

No harm in trying. :D :D
Hilleberg Nammatj 3GT, Terra Nova Quasar, Cabanon Andorra & Calais, Outwell Trout Lake, Hi-Gear Ion 3 and hopefully a Field Candy 'Get a Room' coming soon!
