Delta ground anchors

Postby Huff on Fri Jun 10, 2011 12:37 pm

This seems a reasonable price for them

Anyone seen them cheaper anywhere else?

You can buy them direct from the manufacturers for 99p each. They charge £3 postage - but that is for your total order. So you could buy 10 for £9.99, and £3 postage.

Thanks Sarahc, not sure if people realise that we will only charge £3 for a package, regardless of quantity.

HOW MUCH!!!

Think I'll stick to my rock pegs!

Maybe 4 or 5 for the Cabanon??? I dunno, I don't see that the forces involved are any different than a good quality rock peg banged in at the correct angle?

My brother's talking about getting some for his trailer tent (spends too much time on UKCS, that's his trouble), so I'll point him in the direction of the manufacturer, as I don't think he'll rest until he's got some.

The forces involved are very different. Below I've pasted a link to a debate on Deltas on another forum. It got quite heated!! Look in particular at my main contribution on Page 1 and Sceptical Camper's (with diagrams) on page 2.

It may make for an entertaining read now, but it was damned frustrating at the time. Was he being delibrately obtuse or was he simply not capable of understanding it? I really don't know.

I still claim they are unnecessary. A good 10" rock peg, banged in at the correct angle will do as well, & for half the price. A normal peg should still pivot about it's centre, should it not?
Surely, the bit that goes along the ground is still connected to the end of the "peg" part that's stuck in the ground. You're just transferring the forces along that shaft which is laid on the ground? (sorry, I can assure you I am NOT Tentz in disguise)
I suppose if the whole thing is hammered in to the ground it may help a bit, but then you lose the ability to hook your guy on & off easily (a claim they make on their ad).

I studied engineering when I left school, which was a long time ago, so maybe I'm missing something.

I'm off to bend some cheap tent pegs at 60 degrees & see what happens.....

Think I'm getting it now.

The forces involved mean the delta peg, in effect, doesn't actually pivot, as a normal peg will!

Because the angle is rigid, the whole thing can be considered as a triangle!

It transfers the forces so that the whole of the bit in the ground is being pulled from the corresponding point (in the triangle) where the guy is attached.

Still over priced though!

Maybe 4 for the Cabanon, although I'm just about to hit the deal of the century on a job lot of screw-in rock pegs. DIRECT FROM THE SUPPLIER! (found one just down the road who's letting me collect in person, they should work out at about 30p each!)

What do you mean by 'pivot, as a normal peg would'?

Although the force is acting on the end of a normal peg, it actually pivots around a centre point.

Think about what happens if you get hold of an inserted peg & wobble it back & forth, the top & bottom of the peg would move the most & you would end up creating elongated holes in the ground each getting bigger towards the ends of the peg, & smaller towards it's middle.

Am I right, or have I got it wrong again.

My dad used to live on a narrow boat, & he always told me, whilst handling the boat, that although it steers from the back, it's motion actually pivots (turns) about it's centre.
