I've looked at these and they do look the business. The only problem is I have not long had my double air mattress and as they don't come cheap I think it might be out my budget for now and obviously I'll need two.
However, I do think this is something I will upgrade to next year or even the year after, and do away with the mattress and cheap mats. and have the all in one.




I'm thinking a couple of these will get me through for now tucked under the airbed.

I think you are right, airbed + mat will give the same insulation as a self-inflating mat like our Airics

Wayne how much are these? i only ask as tesco do something like this, not sure if they are the same or not but may be worth checking out

They are £8.99 each, but they are 5 season mats.

They also do a 3season mat for £4.99, which I'm willing to bet is on a par with the Tesco ones.


Yeomans also do these bags for £3.50 60cm x 30cm. Might well be perfect for the 50oz Royal sleeping bags, might look into that.



Liners for sleeping bags, I know nothing about these, do they go on the inside or outside and what's the point of them ?.

I checked in asda this evening and they are £4 but did not check how many season they were.. to be honest the difference in price being so small may be just better off the £8.99 option as you cover all options.

Yeh, I think so, and for £8.99 you get two woven bands that go round it and keep it in a roll lol.
Seriously though, as you say for the little bit extra, its easier to go for the 5 season mats.

Also I note in July's camping mag, if you subscribe @ £6.99 a quarter you get a self Inflating mat from Mulimat as a welcome gift, worth £62 (They claim)

That self Inflating mat from Aldi seems like a good price for a budget mat.

Also, might have been missed earlier, but does anyone use a sleeping bag liner, and for what purpose.

I think you need a sleeping bag liner if you go to a Youth hostel, the Hostel provides the warmth you provide the inner layer, saves them having to wash lots of bedding - iirc has been a while.

I subscribe to camping mag, I started when i started this site.. 1. i like reading it 2. keeps me upto date with news that i can then post..

I got a bag when subscribed its actually pretty good surprise surprise.. subscription gifts are usually pants!.

Our only issue with them is the bags they come in don't pack them down very small, which would be useful so we might get a couple of stuff sacks for them.

As promised I have tried the stuff sac from Yeomans and I'm very pleased with the result, I'm going to pick up another one now for the other sleeping bag.


Weighing the job up


I decided the best approach was to unzip the bag and fold it into three as shown in the picture, then roll it up.


The sleeping bag looked like it wasn't going to fit, but thirty seconds spent kneading it down into the stuff sac soon had it looking good..

Just take note regarding the stuff sac, I found the packet for it and these are the details

To further confirm The Royal Umbria 50oz King size bag comes supplied with a large and cumbersome bag, however the above Gelert stuffsac makes a perfect holder to compact this bag down for travel and storage.

I was about to ask you how you got on with the stuffing the sleeping bag into the stuff sack and then found you had already answered - and in excellent style - it certainly takes up a lot less space like that.

I will be on the look out for some stuff sacks now for our sleeping bags.

Got to say, they were brilliant on the camp this weekend, came out of the stuff sac's easy and went back in easy and the new bags were a dream to sleep in (no pun intended )

I have just come back from a weekend camping on some really rocky ground. I slept on an Aerobed and my husband slept on a roll mat that was already inside his sleeping bag. I have to say the combination of my Areobed and the best sleeping bag ever gave me a perfect nights sleep. I too hated mummy style sleeping bags due to restriction but after purchasing my nanok sleeping bag I am now converted.
