Road Train (Mototrain)

Postby Admin on Fri Jun 19, 2009 5:32 am

So the wife and I have been discussing our trip again. and despite the shortage of funds have decided that instead of just doing the 1 week in germany we will do 2 but 1 week in the black forrest and the 2nd possibly in the alps switzerland.

So have been looking as you do and came across the french road train. This we could use to get from calais to nice (south of france) in one easy trip (alot easier on the boys)

ok so the south of france is not our intended destination. but for the sake of adding on 2 days and stopping here before an amazing drive along the coast into italy and then across the alps to our destination for 1 week and then onto the black forrest. 1st drive being 5 hours and the 2nd only 2 and half.

Sounds good right?

Well yea until i checked the prices!

£640!!!!

Not to be put off i thought i do some calculations. quick browse to http://www.fuel-economy.co.uk/calc.shtml and google to get the milage and hey presto i gota rough price on fuel about 60 quid!

So although i love the idea of the drive along the coast into itally its not gonna happen.. £60 compared to £640.. its just silly

Oh and just noticed this when i went to copy the url to include.

Supplements are also payable for roof boxes, trailers and windsurfs please enquire at the time of booking.

That means more then!! im guessing this road train is pretty empty most of the year!!

I have looked at his option time and time again and totally ruled it out even considering the tolls to get you to the South of France just don't add up to much of a bargain! I have never met anyone who has actually used it yet! I occassionally use the Hull crossing but generally Dover is so competitive that the drive to Dover is inevitable!

Been doing some calculations tonight.

Dussledorf germany (3 hours from calais) you can take the road train to verona in italy over night for 326 euros.

break this down. we estimate that £100 in fuel plus £50 for toll roads..

This drive we would normally do over 3 days. so average that out £20 a night thats £210 in total to drive. take that from the 326 euros thats only just over £120 for the road train.. add to the fact we would save 1000 miles from the car and have a further 3 days to experience italy and then coming back through austria.

Need to look at this further and way to early to plan! but just thought id share as always :)

Reading further, Dinner and breakfast is included within the price. so we can take that costing out also, so were looking appox £100 which is well worth it considering what you gain :)

The only problem is now........ I want to go now!
