Our visit to the Boat and Caravan Show

Postby Admin on Sat Feb 27, 2010 12:44 am

Today we visited the Boat and Caravan Show at the NEC. We left just after 11 and arrived just before 12.30 having taken the taki driver at the carpark up on his offer of a lift to the main entrance for just a £1 per person.. although i knew a bus would be along shortly which is free it was really cold and we were starving! so were keen to get inside as soon as possible. Add to that a chance meeting with rob (Merlin1973) although we never managed to hook up we did have a look round the Yeomans tent display. Split over two levels and broken down into Manufactures this part of the show was pretty empty people wise. Could not help but feel this was partly down to the fact the tent display was tucked away at the far corner.. The upper section displaying the outwell tents was pretty packed in tightly which was a shame as getting around the outside of the tents was not so easy. Access inside was fine but I do like to have a good look round the outside especially on the new Outwell Fantasy range as I was keen to check out the fun wall that they have been hyping up. Although I was able to get round the back I did feel as though I was not meant to be their... bit of shame. The Sprayway display though lower down was spread out a little better. Have to say Sprayway are pretty new to the tent scene as a manufacture but you would not know it they do some fantastic looking tents! If I was in the market for a new tent I would certainly be looking at the range in great detail! The only downside for me was color.. Black and Grey we all know how well the color black attracts the heat of the sun! and cant help but think about how that would be inside on a hot summers day? Yeomans also had on display tents from Vango, Coleman Peakland and Robens although I dont recall seeing any tents from Robens?

On the tent display then. Well we have to thank Yeomans for actually taking part in the show but I do wonder why the Manufactures dont have their own stands themselves? I think it would have been a far better display had they done so in a much bigger way rather than tucked away at the back. That said Khyam did have a stand themselves but only displayed 3 Tents? I guess its all down to demand and perhaps the throughput of customers that are interested in tent camping is just not enough to warrent a big display? At least it was indoors though! The Outdoor Show last year Yeomans were outside on the green and it was freezing!

we then got some much needed food at weatherspoons just outside the NEC's function halls and then headed back in on another entrance. Each hall has a main entrance but you can walk round the entire show without leaving the event itself. We dropped into the Caravan hall.. We have thought about caravans before but looking round so many different models it soon became very tempting only the cost holding us back.. It amazes me how they get so much in within such a small space. Walking around the diffent displays we soon came across Airstream. Have seen these before but never up close and they are truly amazing good old traditional aluminium american rounded caravan is the only way I can describe them oh and very expensive lol! But they look great! or at least i thought so. My wife on the other hand did not seem to agree and was getting chatted up by an over eager sales man that has clearly used a little to much spray tan on these kind of garden table hut things? I say that the guy was very nice and helpfull and clearly after a sale lol. But as nice as they were 7k for a round table with seats canvas walls and a straw roof was a little to much for me! But as she said as we strolled off when the lottery comes in! (can't remember the last the time we got a ticket?)

After a quick look round the motorhomes which impressed me as much as the caravans for the use of space and some of the larger ones costing as much as house! we moved onto some of the smaller stands and were a little taken with people selling the double skillit, looks two frying pans but you can turn one upside and it hooks onto the other wich over a low gas heat will act as an oven allowing you to cook a whole (small) chicken or baked potatoes and pretty much anything you'd normally cook in an over. Very cleaver in deed and a little dispointed we did'nt buy one now!

Looking around the other displays with the hope of checking out some fridges we found none! plenty of cool box's but no fridges. also checked out some seats having decided to replace ours last year. But we have know taken a U turn on that idea as all the others simply dont fold up as small and space is the key when your loading the car up!

So the event itself! Glad we went even though the show is clearly aimed more at the caravan/motorhome camping we had a good day out and enjoyed looking around. thought it was very well organised the space between stands was good you never felt cramped in between everyone else the staff very helpfull with directions when we asked and the only show I have ever attended at the NEC that parking is free! normally you pay £8 so on the whole a good day out could easily have spent alot of money had we had any! If we had done things my way we would have come home In a brandnew motorhome with a caravan on tow and a boat on tow behind the caravan :)

I forgot the camera in the rush to get out! but do have a few pics on my phone which I'll upload as soon as possible!

Hope all those of you who won some tickets from our competition had a good time and please do add your comments onto this thread and i'll be sure to feed them back to the organisers!

Thanks

Andy

Exellent review mate and shame we missed ya but will catch up at the campout and say "blimey i was standing right by ya" :D

Have to admit that there were some stonking caravans with some ingeniouse storage and layout options but i could honestly say that nothing compared to our old Hartford XXL for size, space and practicallity. I just could not see myself the OH and the 4 trouble makers in a caravan for a week ;) I recon 2 days at the most and they would be dragging me off the site wearing a straight jacket and mombling to myself.
Some of those 40ft by 20ft statics though  OMG they were better than my house............. lets sell up NOW!!!!!!!
Hope that those who are due to go have a great time.

Ps. dont forget the cheese :D

Nice report of your day Andy - thanks.

I've never really understood the importance of these shows. I have been to a few of them (always on free tickets).

Why, at the Outdoor Show, do folks have to turn up in full walking gear, with backpacks? Every time they turn around they knock someone with their packs. My theory is that they are outdoor folks, and too mean to buy food - so they bring their own (and a bit more just in case Birmingham suffers an earthquake).

Regarding discounts that you get at the "shows" - they are not that good. Unless you have an "SO" like I have. She goes for the throat with the sales people - asks for discount, gets told she has one already, then argues for more. Something that I couldn't do - but it works - and she gets more discount.

Anyway - that's just my view on the "shows".

Have to agree on one time show discounts.. not always so good.. if you have somthing in mind before you go.. it really helps to know the current high street/online prices :)

We were at the show today.

We got up nice and early and got there for just after 10.00. By the time we walked from the car park and got in, queued for the loo and found our way to the tents it was almost 11!

Anyway, the tent we were hoping to see (the Vango Sungari) wasn't on display but the Yeoman's chap was nice and told us that the Outwell Montana was the same kind of size and to check that one out. We spent AGES looking round them all and had numerous conversations weighing up the pros and cons of each one!

It's a shame the manufacturers don't have their own displays. I thought there was a lots of Outwells in comparison to the other makes and I know that Outwells are THE tent to have but not everyone's budget can stretch that far and a bit more choice would have been good.

That said, we learnt a few things we didn't already know and by the time we were in the car on the way home we had decided to discount the Sungari and go with the Maritsa that we had seen on our initial trip out to look for a new tent!

we've not purchased yet but think we have definitely decided on the Martisa 700 ...

We had a quick wander round the rest of the show just to say we had been but we're not interested in the caravans, motor homes, statics or boats except to marvel at how much spare cash other people must have - lucky things!

Rachael,

Glad you had a good day and found it usefull. despite the questions raised from myself and others with regards to how well tent campers are provided for. the fact that you found it helped proves that although not as some of us would have hoped it has still proved to be a success yourself.. and I'm sure many others.

Thanks for feeding back.
