walks from campsites

Postby pogue on Thu Oct 13, 2011 7:54 am

being the new mod for this forum im going to start off with 'walks from campsites', im sure many of you like to explore the area your staying by taking in the sights on foot? one place we love is angelsey,we are going there this weekend for a three day break staying this time in a hotel at holyhead.there is so much more to holyhead than just being a ferry port, the breakwater is 1.5 miles long [largest in the uk] i will be spending a few hours on there fishing, just round the corner is the breakwater country park,a superb place for a great cliff walk round to south stack lighthouse and spotting of grey seals.campsites abound on angelsey, give it a try and here is a link to this superb walk . http://www.walksfromcaravans.co.uk/html ... _sta.shtml

One of my favourite campsites is Vale of Pickering in North Yorkshire. Part of the appeal is that about a mile from the campsite there is a bridleway that takes you up into Dalby Forest (Mountain Bike Centre). Its a beautiful walk/run/bike.

I love Dalby Forest Badger. Some good routes around the forest for different abilities. The last 2 years there have had a round of the MTB World Cup there as well.

Oh boy! Am getting spoilt for choice now??? I can't go mental on this bike though! (*badger looks over his map of Mount Snowdon!*) :o ... I need it for that! plus i was on a cycle forum earlier and chatting with a guy who did an anti-clockwise tour of Anglesey on his bike last week. He camped twice, had a fab time and it looked great so theres another trip. Hmmmm... I bet there's a way i can tour along north Wales, then go around Anglesey and then head over to Snowdon; Do my 'Mad thing' and head home! Camping along the way obviously! What a road trip that would be

This is going to take some planning! .

I love walking and must say this is what tends to influence my choice of campsite.

Grouse Hill campsite for NYM's walk straight off the campsite on the moors
Silloth House campsite for the Yorkshire Dales and the Y3P's
New Forest well what more needs saying!

The main reason our favourite campsite IS our favourite campsite is because it's in such fantastic countryside for walking. Hundreds if not even thousands of miles of it. Much of that is in the spectacular Cairngorms national park, & that's accessed directly off the campsite without ever going on a proper road. If you cross over the road & up another track into the hills you can walk all the way over to Ballater & beyond, or you can hike all the way to the glorious west coast of Scotland.

Afraid it's a C&CC one though so not cheap. http://www.campingintheforest.co.uk/our ... nmore.aspx

There's another campsite a bit down the road that's a lot cheaper with plenty favourable reviews though -

We still prefer the C&CC one as the walking directly off other one is far more limited, (it's on the estate & you need to backtrack more) & also because we have dogs & they don't allow dogs in the wooded part of the site - the only bit we liked tbh as the other bit is nearer the road is just less natural & less private.

There's a great campsite in Llangorse Lakes Wales with some stunning rural walks near by, the Brecons are quite close too. Crickhowell is also near and that has some lovely walks along idylic stretches of canal.

there are two great campsite that I know of that have great walks near by.

Field Head camp sites in the peak district

and Glen Nevis campsite at the foot hills of Ben Nevis

Have stayed at both of these and would recommend, will be staying at both again in the future.

Got a sat map the other month bit pricey at nearly £300 but worth it, mind you wouldnt go walking without a compass and map.

Glen Nevis is for the more advnace walker esp at this time of year but Field head is useful for any walker

I can vouch for Llangorse being beautiful.

There's a few campsites in Symonds Yat (check the link for a good one) which offer stunning short walks on the flat to the Biblins walk bridge and all along the River Wye, then for the more hardened walkers you have the Wye Valley walk in both directions.. superb for camping and walking :bigwink:
