Oakland XL or Salinas L ???????

Postby kingsandwich on Sun Oct 30, 2011 6:34 pm

Hi everyone,
I started camping this year, have had three long weekends away and now I've got the camping bug. At the moment i have a Vango Tigris 400 which has been fine but fancy a little bit more space in the living area. I've been having a look around and quite taken with the outwell range and think the Oakland XL or the Salinas L are about right in terms of size, I also like the styling and the nice big windows.
So what do you think, good tents? Also is the Salinas worth the extra £100?
Another thing I was wondering is when is the best time to get a good deal, do the prices tend to drop in winter when business is a bit slow or doesn't it make much difference?

Any advice will be much appreciated,

Thanks,
Kingsandwich.

Hi

I think that the salinas L with the canopy on the front is an exellent tent :tent:

It is a little bigger than the oakland and has the covered side entry .... so definatly worth the extra.... would consider the canopy though to cook and sit under

I can vouch for the big windows they do make it so much enjoyable.. just being able have such great views looking out.. however they have to come with curtains to give you that privacy when you need it.. :)

KingSandwich,

Just to let you know the Salinas L has been dropped for 2012, if you buy one, make sure you get the carpet, footprint and extension as they are no longer manufactured..

You will have trouble acquiring them in the future years, the tent has been replaced by the Ontario, which is very similar.

Kind regards

David

I just upgraded to a Salinas L + awning from our Vacanza Vancouver. Not much of a size upgrade on the tents, but I'd been looking for a good awning for the Vancouver all summer and having decided the Salinas would fit, I went whole hog and bought the tent too!

I know it's end of line, hence the prices, £345 for the tent and £135 for the awning. I'll probably carry on using my tarps for the footprint. I'd like the carpet (we have the Vancouver one) for the Salinas but no discounts as yet.

Perhaps, I'll try a carpet altenative, the material for carpets must be available somewhere.

If nothing else the Salinas tent specification is better than the Vancouver.

Someone on here made a site that listed all the tent carpets and their sizes so you could easily find an alternative that' fits.
can't remember who it was though. :bang:

Thanks for that link Camp Moose. Very useful info.

I think I am going to challenge Mrs Erlang to make one for less than £89.00, or we'll do it the picnic rug way.
