Sat Nav for camping

Postby chrisg1975 on Thu Nov 03, 2011 7:47 pm

Hi We have a sat nav (Garmin nuvi 255WT). We also have a Cabanon trailer tent. When we were away last week, the Sat Nav sent us down some narrow roads that would be difficult to get down with our trailer tent on the back of the car. Does anyone know if there is a setting on our Sat Nav that would stop this occurring, or a Sat Nav that is able to be used so you can just travel down wider roads. We wouldn't want to block any roads due to dodgy Sat Nav directions. Thanks. :tune:

Hi
Welcome to the forum :welcome:

This is a tricky but very valid point ........ maybe a hgv setting would do the job
A little investigation is needed methinks

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum.

Looks like Rob has found a good answer

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

Good find Rob.

We've found some interesting places whilst on a satnav detour, but always glad I didn't have the trailer.

Great idea, could've done with that yesterday as I did come face to face with the worlds worst reverser down a narrow country lane with the caravan on the back, & it was my first time towing a caravan! ( :o :? )

Good job my mirrors were set correctly, as I managed to get into the verge as soon as I could, it was painful watching this old boy reverse his car!

£50 is a bit steep for me though, looks like I will have to revert to good old road maps & just use the sat nav to find the address when I'm in the vicinity (which is all they're really any good for anyway, sat navs. They've got some very funny ideas on so called "fastest" route! :? )
4 Canvas tents (various sizes)
3 Plastic tents (various sizes)
& 1 Tin tent (yes, I'm a turn-coat, but it has a canvas awning)

Sat Nav for camping

Your not wrong there nutgone, mine once sent me up a steep road with a hairpin bend, well it was that steep that I couldn't even get round the bend with smoke coming off the tires. In end admitted defeat and reversed all the way back down :)

The thing they do that annoys me is that they will cut off a corner for you, so you going along a main road heading towards a T junction on another main road then a mile or so before hand it'll send you off down some tiny lane ecause it cuts the corner off and saves you perhaps 1 minute, but it doesn't take inot account the fact that the T junction has lights so you can get out and the cut-off road doesn't so you could be sat there for 10 minutes.

These days when it comes up with a turn onto an oddly named road I tend to slow up and work out if it's a little lane if it is we drive past, especially when we're towing.

HGV thing looks good but too expensive at £50+ for me.

There's no excuse for me, I'm only less than 30 miles from home! (just testing the caravan out really), but it's an area I'm not that familiar with.

I will be using a road atlas to get me home & sticking to major routes as much as possible.

I must say, after my first experience of towing a caravan, I'm not impressed. I usually like anything to do with driving, but I didn't like pulling a tin tent. I guess it's just one of those things you have to do, just to get there, then you plonk it on a site & (hopefully) forget all about it until it's time to go home.

I did a good job of it, had the mirrors set up spot on, didn't hit any kerbs or parked cars. I just think I value my car too much, possibly even spoil it. Making it tug a caravan feels like I'm punishing (or even torturing) it! :o
