Those thermal images ...

Postby in-a-tent on Sat Oct 29, 2011 7:04 pm

About a week ago a number of papers published a story discreditting the OccupyLSX campaign where they used thermal images to 'prove' that the majority of the tents were empty overnight.

A few days ago the campaigners rented the same thermal cameras from the same company as the papers had used to show that in fact that the thermal cameras can't see the heat given off by a person in a tent.

Here's the campaigners video (I couldn't find the orginal one made by the papers)

Anyhow, politics aside, it's interesting to see just how well the relatively cheap and cheerful tents that they appear to be using stop the radiated infra-red heat from escaping (which is why the people appear to disappear).

I was quite impressed with how good they are.

Interesting

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

I guess using a thermal camera is one way of selecting the right tent that is going to keep as much warmth in as possible.
Regarding the newspaper article, you know what they say - there are lies, there are damned lies and there are statistics. The paper article was clearly the last one of the lot!

I think the paper's thermal imaging simply showed that one of the tents probably had a good heater on inside it!

Not entirely conclusive, but interesting nonetheless, & I suspect if someone was wrapped up in a good quality sleeping bag, then even less heat would escape, so I'm more than inclined to believe the protesters on this one.

Good old British media, never fail to fail do they? Especially where the truth is concerned.

I was interested at how good the tents seem to be on the video.

They do seem to stop most of the irradiated heat from escaping which is impressive.

I knew this was coming, so I've started joining caravan forums :tune: :rofl2:

(actually, I really have. But they're nowhere near as much fun, & they all seem really difficult to navigate).

I've come to the conclusion; tents don't like caravans, caravans don't like motorhomes & motorhomes don't like anybody!

As usual I don't fit in anywhere, as I love tents & caravans, but am just as likely to take the pi$$ out of either (& I just can't see the point in motorhomes :? ).
