Fleece or Thermolite? Sleeping bag liners

Postby bestie on Thu Oct 27, 2011 1:55 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking for people's advice on the warmest sleeping bag liner to get. I currently have a synthetic bag with a comfort temp of -5 and an extreme temp of -15 but I feel the cold and have been cold using the bag in Janurary. I'm planning a week's trip late Decemember and so am considering ways to get my sleeping bag warmer.
I've had a look at liners and am between these ones:

Sea to Summit AFLEECE liner http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000NSZ3XS/ref=s9_simh_gw_p200_d0_g200_i6?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=10HS16G88T07K2XCPKYQ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128473&pf_rd_i=468294
Hi-Gear Fleece liner http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005LOOKOM/ref=s9_simh_gw_p200_d0_g200_i4?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=10HS16G88T07K2XCPKYQ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128473&pf_rd_i=468294
Sea to Summit AREACTOR liner http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sea-Summit-Sleeping-AREACTOR-Thermolite/dp/B000NQQ4VK/ref=sr_1_1?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1319719301&sr=1-1
Gelert Microfleece Liner

Can anyone give me any tips on which will be warmest and if there is a considerable difference between them? or any other recommendations. Weight is not a consideration for me as I won't be carrying my kit. I can't afford a new sleeping bag but can spend up to about £30 on a liner.
Thanks in advance.

Personally i prefer the silk liners, light, small pack size and adds a few degrees to the comfort rating but i generally use them for when i'm backpacking as i'm a 'cold' sleeper.

I seem to get stuck when turning over in a fleece liner, seems to cling to everything so puts me off them :?

Not used the Thermolite one but they seem to have positive reviews.

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum.

Good question, and one I'm not too sure about as I don't use liners. I have a silk one inmy kit but never used it.

I tend to agree with Pete's comments and Donnelly will also be able to give some good advice when he catches up with this thread

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

Also be aware that a lot of the cold comes through the floor so insulation from the floor is a must

Thanks. I looked at silk but they don't look like they will increase the warmth or comfort much.

I use an airbed and a camping mat for insulation in winter.

We always use silk or pertex liners in our mummy bags. They do help slightly with the warmth, but most people are not keen as they feel cold to the touch, giving the impression that they won't help! :? In the 'envelope ' bag, we use a cotton line which adds slightly to the warmth and does feel warm to the touch. We use these mainly to prevent having to wash the bags as often, as its much easier to clean pertex/silk than a down bag! On warm nights, the bag is usually zipped open with just the silk liner over my shoulders. :D

We also use Snugpack fleece liners on colder camps, mine is Polartech 100 and Fiona's is Polartech 200 fleece, adding 1 season and two seasons, respectively. They are fantastic at adding to the warmth of your bag, highly recommended!! :D :D :D Their only fault, when bought (circa 15 years ago @£30) they had no side zip in to aid access and egress, so my mother who is handy with a sowing machine, put in a 1/3 length chunky zip.

I don't know of the liners you linked to beastie, but Sea to Summit do some quality kit. Failing that, you can often pick up 'roll ends' from ebay or material suppliers and fleece is very easy to sow, with an 'overlocker' its even better.

If you find the fleece 'snags' you, try it with a silk liner as well. That should work a treat. :D
Hilleberg Nammatj 3GT, Terra Nova Quasar, Cabanon Andorra & Calais, Outwell Trout Lake, Hi-Gear Ion 3 and hopefully a Field Candy 'Get a Room' coming soon!
