lake district campers told to be on alert

Postby pogue on Tue Oct 04, 2011 7:27 am

Police in the Lake District have issued a warning to campers after a spate of thefts from local sites.
Officers say thieves are traveling to remote parts of the area to snatch valuables like laptops, phones and handbags from tents.
Bikes left unsecured on car carriers are also a target for criminals.
Now campers are being urged to follow common-sense advice to keep their valuables safe.
Inspector Richard Quinn, of Cumbria Constabulary, said: “Time and again we see people have their visit to this beautiful county spoiled by becoming victims of crime. In so many cases this could have been so easily avoided.
“Crime levels in Cumbria are low, and it is a fantastic place to visit, but campers and caravaners need to be aware that as idyllic as a place may be, opportunist criminals take advantage of people’s trust, and travel to the more remote areas of our county to steal items that have been left insecure.
“By taking simple, common sense steps, we can beat the thieves at their own game. Criminals want an easy life, so don’t give them any opportunity to target you or your family. Secure valuable items or at the very least hide them from view.”

i guess this is useful for any part of the country and all sites!!!
Insp Quinn said it was not uncommon for campers to leave handbags and other valuables by the tent door overnight. In one incident this week, a handbag was stolen after being left outside the tent next to their cooking area.

Our valuables are either in the car when we are out, or in the sleeping compartments, between us when we are sleeping. I also take a baseball bat - for heads and a knife - for hands, should either find their way into my tent when I'm in it.

Hehe...my motto - "be prepared......for anything" :)

I should point out that I'm not violent or slightly mad, but the wife and kids are also in the tent with me.

Hi all
I suppose we have been lucky,as we have never had anything stolen while camping from our tent. But I suppose these drugs hungry thieves are beginning to realise the easy picking they can get from basic campsite around the country, this is the only thing in Shara law I fully agree with, when you catch a thieves cut off their hands
Regards
Rex.

Well we agree on extreme measures Rex, trouble is in this country, if we chop there hands off they will no longer be able to work, and as we know we like to molly-coddle the bone idle in this country. What about hard labour laying new roads by hand on a chain gang under the threat of being whipped if you start slacking off,,,,,,for ohhh lets say 1 year for each pound of the value you stole, so if you stole £100 from a tent then you die in chains :D

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

Oh my you lot really know how to encourage the newbies in this thread!

Here I was, innocently wondering if I should lock my purse in my car overnight or sleep with it next to my bed and now I'm thinking no, you innocent fool, you're crazy to even think about camping if you've not got a decent weapon! :o

Camping is not the crime-ridden anarchic state you may be imagining right now.... :bigwink: I think the previous conversations on this thread got a bit O.T.T. with some of our own brand of humour sneaking in too.... :rofl2:

Actually camping is one of the few things left in this country of ours where I feel safest, amongst like-minded fellow nutters / enthusiasts (delete whichever applicable..lol)

Oh... and then there's Wayne
