Most tent camers are summer campers

Postby rexgrant on Sun Sep 11, 2011 12:31 pm

Hi all
http://news.sky.com/home/article/16066814
So if a family like many do, book a later holiday when the prices drop after the school holidays and go to
North Wales the lakes District are all popular places. so what should you do now with storm force winds and rain are forecast for these areas. the sensiblest thing to do is is pack up your camp and book in B&B for a couple of nights and then set up again Unless you have a tent that will ride out this storm but even if you are inland were the storm will probably be down to a strong gale http://www.stormfax.com/beaufort.htm It will only be safe for a few makes of tents.
There will be 100s of tents campers who have been told that their tents they are using will survive 40 MPH winds.
I just hope know one gets killed you can replace a tent.
Regards
Rex.

Rex I have to ask but are you for real? Talk about scare mongering especially for new campers and it has to be said but with utter rubish LOL.. how many people have been killed by a snapping tent pole its pretty extreme?

Bubble wrap society I'm afraid and not somthing I agree with if were worried and afraid of everything then we'll all do nothing... That is unless were killed by a caravan that's been snaking and blown over onto a poor car on m6 ;)

 Pitkin....

and I have to agree with Andy & Rob in that that was absurd and unbelievable posting that Rex :o

I'm surprised the Karsten didn't get a mention yet again - as apparently that's what we've all got to purchase to survive :bang: :bang:

The sad thing is that Karsten Tents are actually really nice (in my opinion and as I think I said in one of the other threads on this subject), we camped next to a dutch family who had one a couple of years ago and it was a nice tent. They picked it up and carried it across the field because they had to move pitch at one point, that was funny to watch.

Hope Rex isn't single-handedly ruining their image across the Internet with his dogged insistence on their superiority.

I have to agree with you, I have not seen one in flesh but can certainly see that they are a quality product. unfortunately they are far from our reach and many other campers. yes i know you get what you pay for.. but you can only pay for what you can afford. :)

is that dog really tiny or?

I've camped in sub zero conditions with a howling cold wind in Symonds Yat, Forest of Dean before, a few friends had the daft idea but to be fair it was quite warm as we had some decent sleeping bags and duvets etc. In fact I even remember starting a camp fire with frozen logs and twigs. Provided the tent is water proof and you're know what you're doing, as in checking weather warnings on met office and ensuring you have the correct gear I don't see a problem. High winds can be pretty scary when you're in a tent atop a hill side but from my experience you're better off making sure the person in tent next to you is not some nut case, as happened to us couple of years ago in South Devon, then you really do start to feel vulnerable.

I have camping trips planned for september, october, november and december (New Year)

I don't expect to get guillotined or garrotted on any of them

Admittedly I could get furnaced by the wood stove...

Cmon rexgrant, as long as people are sensible and respect the conditions they will be fine - You are an advocate of doing things the right way, lend some of your advice to the winter campers instead of scaring them off

Hmm...

We've spent many a camp in the wind and the wet...well, it is the UK after all!

For any new campers concerned with the orginal post, there are some simple and cheap things to take so that you can carry on camping in most conditions. See this post I did introducing the basics of tarp shelters.

I'm surprised how many campers don't do a few simple things to survive the wind and wet:
- Take some tarps (with poles, lines, etc.)
- Take some wind breaks
- Camp where you are allowed to get a good fire going

We had a good camp in the cold and wet through August in North Devon - it was lot colder than early Autumn (well, this year the start of October was warmer than June, July, August, & September).
Others on the site had to stay zipped up in their tent.

Obviously if you've got a hurricane, you may not want to venture out, but how often does that happen?
The Sky news article in the orginal post was just scare mongering to make the news.

We go camping in spring, summer, and sometimes into autumn, though school term hits us then.
We've not done winter camping (yet), and tend to do other days out that time of year.

If it's going to be cold, just take some extra blankets and duvets.
Remember, there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.....

Have taken it all on-board rex and shall be extra careful when i mountain bike up Mount Snowdon and back down sometime before march... The last thing on my mind would be the tent 'blowing away!'. I tie the bike to it just in case.
