Tent advice!

Postby Rileythunder on Sun Sep 18, 2011 4:47 pm

Hello all, I am currently looking to purchase an oversized tent. (stand up, multiple rooms) Are there any tents I need to look into or avoid?? Ease of build, durability and overall quality are all important. Thank you!!

What sort of size are you looking at and how many do you want to sleep.
The Hartford xxl is an amazing tent that will stand up to really bad weather and has 4 seperate bedrooms ... but it is a BIG tent

Something that would sleep at least 3 comfortably. With plenty room.

What sort of budget are we talking here?

I'm going to have to chime-in with my call for canvas here.

I would recommend a canvas frame tent if it's comfort you're looking for. they usually make the best use of space & have standing room right through (right up to the walls, as they usually have quite straight sides), they're cooler in summer & warmer in winter & don't suffer from condensation. They have strong steel poles & are very rigid, even in the windiest of weather.

They can be expensive new, although there are some unknown brands from eastern Europe selling some very cheap canvas frame tents. But as the quality ones are built to last you can get some very good second hand deals on sites such as Ebay, Gumtree & Preloved.

Downsides are they are quite heavy, & quite bulky when packed, so need more room in the car.

As for types, well there are many, an ebay search would probably be best, or have a look here:

It's the joy of canvas website, put together by our very own (forum member) Littleskink.
Brands to look out for are Cabanon (one of the best), Raclet, Relum, & Marechal. There are many others I can't remember right now.

Good luck with your search, whatever you decide to go for.

3 Plastic tents (various sizes)
& 1 Tin tent (yes, I'm a turn-coat, but it has a canvas awning)
