Hello fellow campers and may I say I love soooo many of you! Your recommendations and advice helped to ensure that we had an overall brilliant time camping with our two young sons.
I plan on writing up a full review of the site that we stayed on (residence du campeur) in Frejus, France soon with lots of pictures that I took for all you lovely campers but for now here is a quick update.
Drive down was brilliant...had invested in headrest DVDs for the boys and the journey was a breeze. We drove as far as Chaumont (Dijon ish) and stayed in a Formula 1 hotel over night before continuing South into the glorious baking sunshine of Frejus. We did find the hotel odd in so far as their were no hand washing facilites in the toilets whatsoever but for £40 the beds were comfy clean and we got a fairly good nights sleep. On our return we opted for a bit more luxury and stayed in a Novotel.... the ensuite bathroom with hand washing facilities really didnt justify the additional £80 per night though.
Our pitch was great in terms of being very flat and well shaded. Thank you to those who advised me on the rock pegs and claw hammer....we would never have pitched the tent with standard tent pegs and mallet alone (we actually snapped the mallet handle trying). We had a lovely little toilet/shower block on our pitch (yes all our own!!!) with hot running water and a great little washing up area and draining board too.
Tent went up great and we soon had all our lovely camping stuff set up and we settled down with a nice hot cuppa and waited for the stars to come out and the chicandas (sp?) to come to life. Slight shock as the campsite entertainment was about 50m from our pitch and started up at 9.30 and went on until almost 2am!!!!!!!! also had a very large crowd of very young students camping on the three pitches next to ours and they would go out at night and return at around 2am to start their own private party which some nights went on til 5am! Would it be mean for me to have enjoyed my two year old screaming hysterically every morning when he woke up around 7am?
The site was very clean, the leisure facilities were excellent and extensive but noise was an ongoing problem for the duration of our stay. At one point we opted to move pitches away from the open air entertainment in the hope of getting some sleep.
The beaches were beautiful, the food wonderful (but expensive .... but hey its the south of france!).
We had stunning weather for the duration of our holiday (high 30’s) but it cooled down to a wonderfully cool and pleasant evening temperature at night. We did have one massive thunder and lightening storm one evening during which our 2 year old slept without so much as a shudder, our 7 year old cried non stop and my husband and I did wonder how much longer the tent might withstand the extremely strong winds.....needless to say it stayed up just fine and kept us bone dry too!
All in all a fab time was had by all (well except our double height air mattress failing!!!!!!).
