Camping at Historic locations

Postby Historic-camping on Thu Sep 01, 2011 9:34 am

If you already enjoy camping you might be interested in the opportunity to do so at historic locations across the UK in the company of like minded individuals.

I'm a member of a 17th century (Civil War) re-enactment group, Manus O'Cahan's Regiment, a member of the Scots Brigade of the Sealed Knot.
Although we portray living history camps populated by the wives and daughters of the 'Soldiers' on campaign it is the battles which provide the greatest impact.
To see a short clip of the Scots Brigade in action, click here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaWwvGkQ_14

Based predominately in Scotland and Northern England, we are part of the UK wide Sealed Knot society, the largest re-enactment group in Europe.

The Sealed Knot organises Historic Re-enactments and living history displays all across the UK from April to October.
Members camp at these events in numbers from half a dozen to several thousand depending on the event being portrayed.
Dozens of events are run every year in locations like Caerlaverock castle, Falkland palace, Kirkcudbright to name just a few in Scotland.
To give a sense of scale, Marston moor in England regularly hosts a battle re-enactment numbering over 1000 participants, horse, cannon, musket, pike.

You can choose to camp in authentic 17th Century tents and cook over a wood fire or bring your own camping gear to suit your own level of comfort.
Whether you choose to 'rough it' in a tent or live it up in a caravan or motor home you will get to join one of the most social and fun pastimes you could imagine.

Train as a Pike man and fight in the Pike block, or learn to fire black power musket and cannon and fight as a musketeer or Gunner.
We are family oriented, have regular social meetings and pub nights in Scotland as well as regular group camping trips to events, or musters are they are known in the society.
The Sealed Knot is a registered charity, membership fees are very cheap (approx £50 annually for family membership, less for an individual).

I enjoy camping in unique locations, drinking round the campfire and fighting in the pike block, many others prefer a more relaxed approach and enjoy sharing an interest in history.
