Camp food essentials

Postby redeyetent on Thu Jul 14, 2011 6:39 pm

I was just wondering what everyone's camp food essentials were. It's nice to fill the coolbox with fresh bacon, sausages, beef mince etc and it's handy to have a shop on site or a supermarket or well stocked petrol station nearby, but if you weren't allowed to re-stock your food supplies and had a coolbox that only lasts a few days, what would you take for a week and what do you cook with it?

For example, we use various tinned meats, cracker breads, pickles, tinned tomatoes, smash, rice and pasta etc. We have a box of condiments that includes tomato ketchup, HP brown, English mustard, Lea and Perrins, Tabasco, Marmite, mixed herbs etc.

We cook things like spicy pasta with cheese and ham, corned beef hash, sausage and mash and curries.

I really like the feeling that we have almost everything we need for meals without having to visit a shop but I know we haven't covered every base am really interested to hear others' ideas!
Camps this year:
March - Dunwich, Suffolk (3 nights)
April - Dolgellau, Snowdonia, Gwynedd (5 nights)
June - Coombe Bissett, Wiltshire (2 nights - rained off)

first night we always do a chippy run, after we have set up all our group's village, its gets a bit late to start cooking,

mornings are always some form of cooked breakfast bacon sausage ect, dinnertime is normally something light, then at night we normally have a bbq, or some other main meal, complete with jacket potato, the favourite one so far is the cheese and cooked meats...

af for essentials, tinned stuff is your normal beans, bacon grill, and other tinned stuff, esp soups if it gets cold at night, drinking chocolate is a must, so is squirty cream (for on top of the drinking chocolate), bags and bags of giant marshmallows, countless flavours of sauces and mayo's, bags of dried pasta an spagetti, corned beef and normally a large tin of ham (for omelettes), rest of our needs are covered by trips to the local supermarket....
Camping is an addiction, and YOU will become addicted...
