1st Camping Trip

Postby pagey on Sat Apr 30, 2011 7:41 am

We are off this morning on our 1st camping trip to the little village of Wing which is situated not far from Rutland Water. To say we are nervous is an under statement, we just hope that the weather stays nice and the kids enjoy it.

This is the campsite http://www.winghall.co.uk/camping.html

Looks ok, as we left it until the last minute there were no pitches left with the electrical hook ups but I'm sure it we will be fine.

The OH is in a major flap in case we have forgot anything, I would'nt mind but were only 45 minutes away from home :rofl2:

I will let you know how it went, wish me luck !

Good luck, but I don't think you need it. I'm sure it'll all go well.

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

Good luck on your first trip, nice looking site, its been added to my list of sites to goto :D

And whats wrong with forgetting things, thats normal with camping, no matter how much you pack, you are bound to forget something,

Enjoy your time away, the weather will be good for ya,
Camping is an addiction, and YOU will become addicted...

Yeah you always forget something. We forgot the washing up liquid this weekend. Luckily the sinks had hand soap dispensers with it in. Have fun, hope you enjoy it.

Hi all, got back this afternoon and must say we throughly enjoyed ourselves apart from a few hitches.

We went with my brother and his family who are also completely new to camping as well so we were all in the same boat. We arrived on the Saturday afternoon and the women and kids went off for a walk while we checked in and started to erect the tents as we did not want any distractions.
The first tent took us about 2 hours to put up and we were getting a bit stressed out but the once we had done that the 2nd tent went up in 30 minutes once we knew what we were doing as we both brought the same tent

Once they were up we unpacked and put everything in place and got the beers out and set about making the 1st meal, this is where it went a bit pear shaped. We brought 2 stoves from Go Outdoors and to cut a long story short one was broken when we unboxed it and the second one would not stay lit  Luckily my brother had two outwell stoves and they were fine so we just shared them for the 2 days which to be fair we all ate together anyway so it turned out ok.
We got the chairs out and sat one one of the kids sat on it and it snapped !! So 3 items that were Hi Gear brand and they were broke !

We had a walk around the site and it was ok but nothing to do really, but the worse thing about it was the showers, they were discusting, you would not bath your dog in there they were that bad but unfortunatly had to put up with them as they was no other choice !

After a meal of bacon and sausages etc, we sat about and had a laugh drinking, then we turned in for an early night.
We were a bit worried about the children keeping warm as the temperature dropped pretty quick but we wrapped them up and they were fine. Me and the wife wrapped up got in bed and we alayed there and was shocked how you can here everyones converstions on the camp site once everyone was in bed, so you can imagine how stressed we were when at 3am the youngest woke up screaming because he did not know where he was and we were getting major stressed as we did not want to wake the whole site up!
Eventually he calmed down and was fine for the rest of the night, we were a bit cold but just added more layers.
When we woke there was an elderly couple who were pitched opposite and they were giving us daggers, obvisouly woke them up

The following day we went for walks and chilled around the site playing games and the kids loved it, cooked more food and drank more beer and the 2nd night we slept like logs including the kids.

The worse thing was packing away the tent and making sure it was clean and getting it back in the case but it was not to bad in the end just a bit stressful

One thing that made us a bit mad was the old couple across from us who constantly stared at us every time we raised our voices or laughed and kept staring at the children and shaking there heads every time they laughed or ran about, it was not just with us it was the 2 familys either side of them as well. I would'nt mind but there was an adult only field across the way where they would of been better off.

So to sum things up we had a brilliant weekend, but we need to make sure we check things work before we go.

Can't wait to go again and the wife is already looking for sites for the Bank Holidays at the end of May and August, the kids want to go back as well so I think we all have the bug

Glad you had a good first trip

Firstly don't get stressed .... just take your time .... the more practice you get the easier it will be

Secondly ..... sod the old gits ..... most campers have had kids and understand what it is like .... just ignore them
