first time camping this weekend!

Postby Vjay on Fri Sep 03, 2010 12:08 pm

Hiya

Well we've decided that as it's a nice weekend we're going to go down the Gower in Swansea and camp for Saturday morning - Monday afternoon. There's no electric hook up though so I was after ideas of what food to take as we have a 3yo and a 1yo.
Was thinking basics like beans, toast, eggs, cheese, crisps etc

Any other suggestions would be most welcome!

VJx

p.s sooooooooooooooooooooo excited!

hi,

when we go away, we tend to take packets of savoury rice and pasta, ones that you just add water or milk to. drop it all into a pan on the stove and simmer until ready. we also have a grill on our stove so we can do toast, so beans, hoops, meatballs, anything that you would normally do in a saucepan is good.

hubby and I also managed to cook chili con carne and spaghetti bolognese on our camping stove over the bank holiday weekend.

try and get some hot meals down you at night, cos it's going to be cool in the evenings.

We nearly always take some tins of curry or chilli and some of the uncle ben's microwave rice which can be emptied in to a frying pan with a tiny bit of water and heated. It is great.

We take tins of stew/chilli/curry, boil in the bag rice, fresh meat (enough for the 1st day or so provided there's facilities to freeze your coolbox blocks), a bag of new potatoes, , bread, crackers/Ryvita's, cheese, salad and fruit. Other than that we eat out. My son has breakfast (fry-up while the meats fresh or cheese sandwich) but I don't bother and we generally either have a lunch out then just a snack in the evening at the tent.
Saying that, the last trip we went on the weather was so bad we couldn't cook at all so we had to eat out all the time........quite a bit more money than I was expecting to pay, lol!!
Oh and we also take Pringles (bcoz of the tube they don't crush like crisps and don't take up much room), choccie bars and peanuts for energy.
Enjoy your weekend, don't forget warm clothes for nighttime.
Jane.

we take beer and wine ... and yes I think some food lol

tins of beans and soup, pasta and stir in sauces - pesto we always have pasta 'n' pesto mmmmmmmm :-)

for brekkie, brioche and little variety packs of cereal (it wouldn't be camping else)

we eat out a lot so it's mainly breakfast, snacks and the odd meal back at camp

On our first camping trip I made some Bolognese sauce and froze it and kept in a the cool box, it deforsted slowly and it just needed heating on the stove and some pasta cooking which wasn't a problem. Also BBQ is good, Hotdogs etc

My Sarah, does a chilli and freezes it into the plastic containers Indian takeaway food is delivered in, as you say they thaw out slowly and also act as ice blocks :D

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

LOL! :rofl2: It is amazing what you can cook simply, or warm up. I usually take a chilli I have cooked at home for the first night.
