Hoping to get back camping

Postby Addo on Mon Jan 30, 2012 9:48 pm

Hi, I'm a 54 year old former camper from North Yorkshire, who used to take my kids to sites all over the country. They've all grown up now, and have families of their own, and unfortunately my wife doesn't fancy sleeping in a tent now. I've taken early retirement from work, still have my tents and gear, and would love to get back into camping this year, but don't know anyone who shares this passion. Could I go off on my own, are there any other tent campers who go alone ?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

There's absolutely no reason why you can't camp alone and I do see it on my travels; not often but some do. But the meets with other members of the forum are also a good idea. Never done it myself but that's partly because I still take my kids camping and don't have time for other camps.

But whatever you do, do get back into camping. It's one of the things in my year I really look forward to.

Hi Lofty. No I'm from Scarborough. I have camped all over Yorkshire, Lincs, North Wales and the Lakes when we used to go on family holidays. Havn't gone for about 5 years though as our kids have left home and started their own families and my wife has decided she prefers a warm hotel room nowadays.

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum :welcome:

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

Hi Addo, what a shame, thought you may be the Addo who had the pub in Tad, ne'er mind eh? Enjoy your solo camps.

Hi Addo & a very warm :welcome: to the forum.

I'm a solo camper (I used to say a "lone camper", but that sounded a bit sad, solo sounds a bit more cool I think). I did a 5 week tour of France summer before last, all on my own (I wrote a blog too. There's a link in my sig, just below this post). I had a great time, there's nothing quite like solo camping for truly getting away from it all. It doesn't suit everyone, I'm one of those people who is very comfortable with their own company.

There's no doubt about it though, us solo campers do get looked upon in a strange manner. Not maliciously, I think we are just a bit of an enigma to others (or maybe some look upon us with envy, thinking "I wish I'd come on my own" :rofl2: ). It's well worth a try though, in my opinion.

I also attend meets & camp-outs with people from forums (I'm trying to arrange one myself for April, but it's down near Hastings, so probably a bit far for you), I would also recommend this, as everyone I've met so far has been lovely & I've had some really good weekends.

Best of luck.

Oh yes, & I'm also surprised at how many solo campers are married or have partners. I think for many of them it's a nice break for the wife, when hubby goes off for the weekend (& vice versa, as I also know plenty of women solo campers).
