What is a fly sheet

Postby rexgrant on Sat Nov 19, 2011 10:56 am

Hi all
I wonder why modern campers call the main tent sheet a fly sheet?? You see all my camping life a fly sheet is a water resistant sheet that fits over the tent main sheet to add insulation, protection and weather resistance to the tents main sheet, it is raised slightly above the tent using the tents own poles, today it is used as a tarp using its own poles above or even separate from the tent, I suppose if you call the bedrooms the main tent then the main cover could be called a fly but in my opinion it is not ,

Rex.

Interesting point Rex, I guess it's just one of those words which get misused these days, like so many others.
4 Canvas tents (various sizes)
3 Plastic tents (various sizes)
& 1 Tin tent (yes, I'm a turn-coat, but it has a canvas awning)

My other passion;

I'm glad you mentioned this Rex. I first starting hearing it a few years ago when they refered to the main tent as the Fly, I had to look closer wondering where the fly was. Over time I have accepted that the term has been stolen and given to the main tent. Still don't sit right with me, I remeber the fly as the second skin like you described. The first tent I properly bought myself was a two man tent with the fly over the main tent, I'm wondering what happened to that now. I remeber going camping in it to Lathkill Dale with a girl, but i don't remember what happened to it after that weekend :think: :think: :think: . Don't even remember the make, but it was about 20 years ago

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...
