21st century caravan design

Postby nathaniel on Mon Mar 15, 2010 1:27 pm

Dear Readers,

I am currently studying for a degree in Product Design at the University of Nottingham and my final project looks at redesigning the caravan/camping experience for the 21st century. I intend to come up with a design that is a departure from convention but still maintaining the spirit of the caravan and incorporating innovative methods of creating space.

I would like to collect some information from current caravan owners or avid campers about your camping experiences. What are the main things that you like and dislike about your caravan? Which features are essential and are there any that you don’t even use? Any fundamental or minor problems during towing, or everyday use (e.g. when cooking, sleeping, storage etc)? Have you any thoughts about improvements that could be made in existing caravan design to cater for your needs?

Any feedback will be very helpful for me in understanding the needs of the market and to be able to put together a design specification.

Thanks, N.

I can see the slide outs on 'vans being popular. Have you seen the 5th wheeler 'vans? I don't want to tow anything longer than what i've got at the moment and like it on a single axle. I like a toilet but am not bothered about a shower. Would prefer more hanging space for wet towels though. Don't need a large wardrobe but would like lots of shelves instead for storing our clothes.

I don't have a caravan but my sister does.

What I don't like about it.

The toilet/shower is just to small. design it in such away that the toilet folds away to shower and then comes out again into the shower area when finished.

Making the dining table into single beds for the kids seems like to much trouble in the evening, make it more simpler, push a button and they come down out of the ceiling.

That's all I've got :?

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...
