a question about reasonable camping prices

Postby hiker1 on Sun Jul 12, 2009 1:08 pm

i have in the past been backpacking around with just a rucksack and a tent. to get around easilier this year i thought i'd get a campervan. now when i arrive at a campsite in this campervan, why do some sites feel they can charge two or three times as much as for a tent, when occupying the same size ground space? just because i have a campervan it doesnt mean i am rich. i could arrive as before with just a rucksack. using a campervan means i am not as influenced by the weather so i stay longer, and i can actually get to your site where there is no public transport.

perhaps tariffs should be based on the number of people staying, or the size of the plot?

thankyou to the vineyard on anglesey which charges by the number of people @ 5.00/night and to caerfai farm, and All ty coed, St. dogmaels, cardigan.

I will leave the site before I pay more for a campervan than for a tent when I occupy the same size groundspace. http://www.thecampingforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=444

Hiker, welcome to the forum.

I have to say not being a campervan owner or user i have not noticed that it is more expensive. I would suppose that those sites that have hard standing gravel or tarmaced section for van would use that as justification. or in the past the electric or water hook up, but with so many tent users taking EHU now and the fact that it is charged seperate usually we cant pin it on that..

But very valid argument when you consider many tent owners are pitching tents of a larger size than some campers. plus the space the car takes also..

So it seems you are unfairly peanalised??

Anyone else offer any suggestion as to why?

On another note. if you have good feed back on a site for campervans then please feel free to supply more info for others. website, email or telephone?

Cheers

Andy

A valid point "Hiker 1". Its the same for us with school holidays.

Some people say its because they have to employ more staff because its busier. Yes and because its busier your taking more money from the customers in charges. Dear me, do we look stupid  .................... :| don't answer that.

Welcome, by the way :D

Nope, never took it out of the box. But, the salesperson said this tent was super easy to set up; even in windy conditions...

School holiday prices is a consequence of the basic economics of supply and demand, during the school holidays there is more demand so they can charge more.

Oh the whole charging more for campervans (and caravans) doesn't really make sense except that they can charge more so they do. Things are worth what people will pay and I guess campervaner and caravaners are willing to pay the extra, or at least expect to pay extra.

Economics is a complicated old thing.

i think there should be a standard size plot (maybe 4x2 metres) that is charged by the number of people in that plot whatever camping unit you bring. and plots to have a standard distance between them (6metres?). most small/medium size tents take up the same space when you add the ropes anyway. and small campervans/caravans would use the same space. and then there would large plots that are charged more, but which are also charged by the number of people in it. so in a standard plot charges maybe 25.00 per person, and in a large plot charges maybe 30.00 per person, whatever unit you camp in.

then you would be charged for extras you may have such as a dog, car (though i dont see why if it fits in the plot), EHU, wifi, room service, butler etc.

Makes alot of sense, (loving the butler!! rofl)

I would think some sites are very much like this keeping it fair between tents and vans.. but i suspect they are few and far between tho which is a shame

4x2 metres is a bit of a squash!
I like the concept though. Pay for the space you take up and the amount you add to the queue in the toilets. anything additional you pay for on top.
I'd get clobbered having a large tent (5x7 metres) and too many kids - well according to the guardian at least :-) but it does sound fair.

As in "I remember when this were all fields" ie a long time a go. :-)

I thought that was a fittingly apt little saying given the topic of conversation.

Hi I have just returned from managing a campsite in France and you will not like my reply!! Its the truth though! I guess this maybe one of the reasonns that you are having to pay a higher price in the UK also. Often people would come on the campsite for only one night with a "campervan" that was absolutely huge-here the probelms start. Damage to trees, damage to pitches due to their sheer weight. Many have been "wild camping" for days on end and have huge dirty water/ sewerage tanks on board. They then decide once on a campsite to empty them all and quite often blocked up the drains. They would then fill up thier many water tanks (when most european campsites are on water meters) and drive away again ready for another weeks wild camping! We found that we suffered untold damage to trees pitches, drains and a hefty water bill all for 13 euros a night! We often turned Campervans away as do many campsites. We could take 100 tents/ backpackers on for the same money and have no probelms whatsoever. Unfortuantely you maybe a very considerate campervan owner but there have been a lot of people out there who have spolit it for the majority!
